EGR Valve
Has anyone had the P1404 code which indicates something wrong with the EGR valve? I have read that trying to clean it sometimes corrects this problem. Can anyone verify this? Does the EGR valve just improve emissions, or does it also affect performance?

I don't know about the code and cleaning, or attempting to clean, the EGR valve could be rather difficult and questionable about the results.
As for the performance question, yes the EGR valve definitely affects performance. If it doesn't work properly you can get anything from a hesitation to complete stalling.
