VR4, Jetta 1.8T, and daddy...

Yeah, we finished playing hockey last night around 10:30, and had a 15 minute drive home. I left in the VR4 by myself while my dad was waiting for my brother in his 2000 Maxima. I'm on the highway minding my own business when a Jetta starts to pass me. Whatever, I just keep driving. I notice he stays beside me, and I figure out what he's doing, but the car needs U-joints and I'm trying to be easy on it. I slowed down a bit, and he just stayed beside me, looking over. I sped up a bit with the same result. Finally, it was time to say good night to our friend in the 1.8T, so I dropped into 3rd and that was the end of him being beside me.

I went around a bridge, slowing down to mind my own business again, when I looked in my mirror to see the Jetta desperately trying to hold off a car with foglights blowing him away on the inside...yup, here comes dadd . A second later, dad goes by me on the inside and a minute after that I passed him again. We toyed with the Jetta for a while, and then he made his move on me, and I went into 3rd and this time he had the jump and was definitely quick, but by near the end of 3rd I had started to pull, came up on traffic, pulled out in front, and let dad have his turn. It was decently close, but the Maxima was working good last night and dad beat him by a few cars. Dad subsequently went into the inside lane and started going by me, but this time I decided to show him that the 3000GT is faster. Well, it didn't work. As I matched his speed, the car was at 6000rpm in 3rd, then the driveshaft started vibrating majorly, and the car refused to accelerate anymore. It wouldn't go beyond 6k, and wouldn't go any faster. Needless to say, dad went by me pretty good and I let off worried the car was toast, but it seemed fine after that.

We were almost home and stopped at a one lane each way red light. Long straight after that. Dad took off normally, and there is a passing lane I knew I was going to go for once the car coming the other way had passed. As soon as the car was almost by us, dad floored the maxima, and I nailed the VR4 which was already in 2nd. The car passed, I swung into the passing lane, and by the time I hit 3rd, I was flying by. I definitely felt better that I proved my point. Of course, he could just get the Mustang out, install the gears and do the 347 stroker kit he wants, and make my already red car blush, but that'll be for another time. Oh yeah, $7500 Canadian for the VR4 to anyone who's interested. Thanks for reading. Till next time...

Why didn't you shift at 6000 rpms? Is the VR4 automatic?

No it's a stick, but I was scared the car was going to fall apart so I held it there for a couple of seconds to see if it would kick in again, and then let off.

Sounds like a good time, once again, glad your dad shares the same passions.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.
