PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
what about the 1999 sunfire, is there a transmission dipstick in it? if so where is it? Can you blow your trany by puting too much fluid in it? I was told to fill it to the top of the fill resevior, obviously that was wrong, but in the meantime i had put 3 quarts in. Do I need to get it drained right away!!? Thank you, desperate city girl, who knows very little about cars. |

Re: 1999 sunfire transmission dipstick.
k calm down.... look on the driver side, undernieth your abs system (where you pour in your brake fluid) about a foot and a half under that is where the dipstick is at. the 96-99 trannys take 2 quarts of transmission fluid and if you overfill just drain a little back out.

Re: 1999 sunfire transmission dipstick.
automatics do not have a dip stick and even some manuals don't.. there is a screw that you need to take out on the bottom of the tranny and when it comes out that hole it is full and if you have over filled... etc..

OK underfilling can cause slipping or loss of drive and overfilling can cause foaming and loss of fluid, no blowing it up! If you replace the filter it takes 4 quarts not including the Torque converter. Ok to check the fluid level for a 3 speed auto; The car needs to be level and at operating temperature so take it for a little run first 10 mins should suffice. 1. With the parking brake set, start the engine and then move the shift lever though all of the selections and stop in park. 2. With the Engine idling, remove the dipstick, this is located at the back of the trans under the brake master cylinder 3. Wipe the dipstick and then dip it back in until it fully seats, then remove and check the level. It should be within the 'hatched' area. 4 speed, 1.Safely raise and support the car (need to be level and secure!!!!!), start the motor and idle for 3-5 mins.Move the shifter though all selections (keep foot on foot brake) and end at park 2. Locate the check plug on the trans. This is located near the pan next to the engine oil drain plug and will not be facing down but parrallel to the floor. 3. place a container under the check plug and then remove it. the fluid should be level with the bottom of the hole if it pours out then it's too high and just let it drain into the container if it's too low (no drips at all), then fill it through the fill cap in small amounts until it drips. 4. reinstall the check plug securely. In both cases chack the fluid if it looks dark and almost brown or smells burnt it needs to be fully replaced.

The 3 speed auto has a dipstick, the 4 speed auto does not. You have crawl underneath and pull the screw out and fill it up until it comes out, after its done dripping plug it back up and your good to go.
