Question about 2000 T/A headers
My brother bought a 2000 Trans Am this past summer and the car is better than mint. The only major problems I have with the car is the exhuast tips (which are ricer turned up tips) and the extrodinarily nice (and probably expensive) SLP headers. The exhuast tips problem will soon be fixed but the headers piss me off. The headers I believe are mid-length, but they could be long tube not for sure. Now, the problem with them is that they hang down like an extra 2.5-3 inches below the bottom of the car, which is a pretty big deal with cars that sit so low in the first place.
So I am wondering why would they sit down so low and what can be done to fix this? The only thing I can think of is to take off the headers and put in different ones. Also, can an exhaust shop do work to a car without cats if you have them put some Hi-flows in? Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help... |

Re: Question about 2000 T/A headers
I have SLP longtubes on my car as well.
They do hang low. I have had them on the car for about 6000 miles, and they have only scraped three times. Just be a little careful. Or switch the headers out with Jethots or Kooks. I am swapping mine out for Kooks 1 7/8" when the stroker goes in.

Re: Question about 2000 T/A headers
I found out that they are most likely mid-length, they collect almost right under the firewall.
So is this an SLP problem? |

Re: Question about 2000 T/A headers
I didn't know SLP made a midlength. I don't see it listed on their site.
SLP's LS1 headers hang low. Lower than any other brand from what I understand.

Re: Question about 2000 T/A headers
I could be wrong about them being mid-length. How far do yours go back before the collector? Do you have problems with them scraping if you go over speedbumps at all?

Re: Question about 2000 T/A headers
Speed bumps are the worst. Although, if I creep over them, most don't scrap. The big ones are bad though. Mine isn't a daily driver, so I don't run into many problems.
They go back a decent amount. Sounds like the longtubes to me. If you can see the collector bending down next to the car, I would bet they are the longtubes.

Re: Question about 2000 T/A headers
SLP only makes long tubes. The problem is that they were one of the first suppliers to offer long tubes for LS1's. This is why they sit so low. They were concerned with clearance from the body. The same reason GM put an almost flat pipe on the driver side.
Most exhaust shops will work on a car without cats. Don't expect a receipt though. I have Jet Hot's and they're great. They tuck up as good as the stock exhaust did. |

Re: Question about 2000 T/A headers
How much do those Jet Hots or the Kooks go for? And how much work is it to put them on?
