Re: Replica
There was a guy online who had a BIG a** PDF bough how he built his. He started from scratch though. The only McLarens i know u can get replica of easily are the Can Am cars. Try Kitcars.com and places like that.

The SP series from the drawings have a sort of Enzo, McLaren, Fiero look to them. But I do like the picture of the grey one on the intro page. You have my interest piqued. MR2 based? Interesting. Would be curious about the specs on it. The one thing I hate about full size replicas.. is that you will always compare it to the original.. and it always fails to compare. But an original idea like the grey one on the intro page, should definitely generate interest. Good luck with it! Regards OK Just saw the pics at DDRMotorsport.com .. a lot of McLaren copying going on. DDR Motorsport Pics Build Steps

Re: Replica
MR2 based kit cars are good not as good as tube chassies but good. I agreed bout making a kit off a real car they can't compare but u can go orginal and so somthing to make it stand out. Like on kitcars.com there was a guy that had a diablo kit and had a murc. front bumper. If the car is light enought the stock 3S-GTE could defintly push the car. Also have u all checked out the Factory Five Racing orginal kit car? GTM somthing.

Re: Re: Replica
According to their website.. it's a tube chassis using the MR2 for inspiration and motor. If it's small and light enough.. it should be interesting. Pricing to be around $30K - $40K.

While I'll probably get flamed for this...
What's the point of making a replica? There'll be nothing about it in common with the F1, other than the looks. It won't give you the same driving experience and luxury that a real F1 will. You're just better off buying a real sports car with the money you'd spend building/buying a replica. |

Re: Replica
Most build like to build replicas/orginals because its one thing to drive a car you bought but what bout a car u built. Like my dad has owned like 6-7 motorcycles in his life never really cared to get rid of them but when he buitl his first chopper from the ground up he loves it and wont give it up. I guess it is mostley to pride in knowing you built somthing it has part of you in it. Your blood, sweat, and time. As for a driving expierence there is a company i thought buying a lambo diablo replica off of once i did the math on the power to weight ratio. I found out the car could run with the real car for alot less. I'll post up my link later to that.

Re: Re: Replica
Was the chopper a replica? There's a difference between making your own vehicle, and making one that looks like a well known vehicle.
Sure, you can build your own car that has 80% of the performance of a lamborghini for 10% of the price, but the looks of it have nothing to do with the performance. Making it look like a lamborghini has nothigng to do with it performing like a lamborghini (don't nitpick over aerodynamics.) My point is that if you're going to try to make a replica, you want to try to make it 100% like the original car. There's some classic cars which have replicas...Shelby mustangs and GT40s are among the most common examples of this. These are fairly accurate to the original vehicles, because it's easy to take 1960s and 1970s technology and build it in your own spare time. The problem is that most replicas of supercars aren't anywhere near the original car. What's the difference between building your own fast car, and putting a unique body on it, as opposed to putting a McLaren-esque F1 body on it? In neither case do you get an accurate reproduction of what it's like to drive the car. The McLaren F1 is more than just a powerful engine with a light chassis. Building your own car with a light chassis and a powerful engine won't necessarily reproduce the feeling of driving an F1. And certainly neither will a vehicle with a similar-looking body shell. |

Re: Replica
You are almost right. Except that with an Ultima chassis and decent motor, you can get close to the feel of the handling, especially if you adjust the suspension to make it a bit soft and toe the wheels out (I think it's out, not sure) so that there is plenty of understeer.
The feeling is best approximated if you keep in low gear, in the torque band, and dart into a corner and try to make the car go around the corner while feeding it more gas without meddling with the clutch/gearshift. It's a lightweight, tossable package, but it's different from the Lotus Elise because of the huge amounts of very controllable power that an Elise can't replicate. I do agree with your comments about replicas in general. But I guess it works for some people. |
