To tell you the truth, this is a really bad arguement; and it will get ugly soon. Delete it before the flamewar starts.

Re: What engine is best ? Rotary? Four banger?
i had a 87 rx-7 and now have a b16 hatch, bone stock my rx could beat a ls but my hatch could beat the rex. this has alot to do with gearing and not horse power. (rotary has 140 non turbo 1.3 liter b16 160 1.6 liter) and yes this is a bad arugment to start but i lover the way a rotary sound when its spinning a 7000 rpms and it soundes so effortless (it is non turbo never had the privlege of ridding in a turbo) but id take a turbo b20 rotary(jspec only) over any honda motor

Re: What engine is best ? Rotary? Four banger?
This isn't really a fair comparison. It really depends on how each engine is set up and how many rotor rotary engine you're talking about. All of the afore mentioned engines have their good and bad sides. The rotaries lack torque hardcore, but can rev so high and so fast. Watch this http://lightningrotors.rotary.net.nz...0bmazda616.mpg that's a turbo 3-rotor rotary. It has 700-800 whp. There are also movies for 4 cylinder cars that would be equally impressive.

and we all know the best way to make a I4 fast is add 4 more pistons hell its getting locked anyway might as well have some fun

Re: What engine is best ? Rotary? Four banger?
i dont think its fair how they rate the displacement of the rotaries. mazda rates the 13b as 1.3 liters, but if you read the SCC article they talk about how its really 2.6 liters. it makes sense because the 13b's/renesis make as much or the same hp(NA) as the 2l i4's but are known to have worse efficiency then piston engines.
the rotaries are good because they dont have alot of rotating assembly and they have alot of displacement in a small package. the thing that sucks is you need FI to go fast and when you do use FI they like to overheat(which is why you see lots of turbo rx7s go overkill on the cooling). |

Re: What engine is best ? Rotary? Four banger?
the reason there based on 1.3 liters is actual displacment but each time the rotor spins it goes trough three chambers which essentialy would double its dissplacment if you compare it to a standard piston. and a 13b has 133 ftlbs of torque (1984-88)and 140 hp while the b16 is its closest comparison of 111 lb-ft @ 7,000 rpm with 160 hp
oh and this is my dream car 20b cosmos 1990 - 1995 A truly modern Eunos Cosmo (based on the 1985 MX-03 concept car) started production in 1990 on the new JC platform. It remains the most powerful rotary-powered vehicle in history, and is the only Mazda to use a triple-rotor engine. The car was a 2+2 coupe and was loaded with power amenities. An automatic transmission was mandatory. Two engines were available, the twin turbo 13B-REW and the 20B-REW. The triple rotor 20B had two liters (1962cc) of displacement, which is quite large for a rotary powerplant. It produced 299 hp (224 kW) and 300 ft.lbf (402 Nm) with twin turbochargers. The Cosmo was manufactured from FEB-90 until SEP-95 for a total of 8875 sales Dimensions: Wheelbase: 2750 mm Front Track: 1520 mm Rear Track: 1510 mm Length: 4815 mm Width: 1795 mm Weight: 1570 kg so sexy so stock heres the web site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Wankel_engine |

Re: What engine is best ? Rotary? Four banger?
this is what i think about the rotary displacement business: if you ever looked at how the rotary work, in order for one chamber to complete one cycle, the second chamber on the rotor wouldve took in air also, so instead of ~600cc per cycle its more of around 1300cc per rotor. imo, it's misleading(they essentially measured it like a 2-stroke piston engine, but it still has "4 strokes".), but like i said before you can have alot of displacement in a small package like that.
also, imo the b16 is not the 13b's/renisis competitor, its actually the B18C, F20C and F22C. the b16 is usually put up againt the miata and protege motors. but any turbo rotary should be able to beat F20C's easily. i like to think of the rotary is a cross-breed between a turbine engine and a piston engine(pretty much a best of both worlds). your right about the 20B, its VERY powerful. theres a vid of a turboed 600hp 20B ae86 on the internet, and that thing flys. theres also talk of people taking two 13Bs and mating them together inline. although ive never seen it, it has the potential to be a beast. |

Small block chevy. They made 90 million of them! Cheap and easy to build. Now that would be neat in a honda.

A rx-8 and a s2000 are a fair comparison and the s2000 is the better car. |

Pound for pound I think that the rotary wins hands down. I love and respect the B18c engine (I own a GSR), but I've always wanted a 92'-95' RX7 TT. Did you ever watch the first "Fast and the Furious"? J/K, I know it's just a movie. But in my opinion the best japanese street car (other than a 96' Toyota Supra TT) is a 2nd gen RX7. But like I said, that's just my opinion. I4's are more practical and reliable. Oh and they usually give off less emissions. But who cares about that right?

Re: What engine is best ? Rotary? Four banger?
you want the 3rd gen rx and they eat gas, mine was getting about 15 mpg in town and 19 or 20 on the highway, plus they burn some oil, and this was a stock 87. the newer motor in the rx-8 is supposed to be better in the mpg then other rx-7.

Re: What engine is best ? Rotary? Four banger?
you know... rotary engines can rev up to as high as bikes can rev up since there are no valves and valve springs and stuff like that that have to keep up. there is also a lot less moving parts than a 4 stroke engine. the thing is rotary gets real hot real fast since everything happens so fast.
