98 Explorer Tranny problem?

Weirdest thing..My 4x4 selector never showed the Transfer case was in 4 low,but would signal it was in 4 high.It never seemed to matter until today.

I drove the truck about 130 miles one way today. When I got to my destination,I had to wait for someone for a few minutes.I decided to try to see if the Low Range light would come on if I shifted it into neutral and moved the selector into 4 low.Well,it didnt work, but heres what it seemed to do.

I shut the truck off and went inside for a few hours, when I came back to leave, the truck didnt want to shift out of what seemed like a very low set of gears..I could feel it shift 3 times, but it would then rev out to about 4500 rpms and onlly go 40-45 mph.The "O/d off " light would then blink on the dash.If I push the OD switch on the end of the gear selector in,you can feel the tranny shift down to a lower gear,(as though you took O/D off under normal circumstances).

Confused yet?

Coud it be the selector motor on the tranny? I dont hear it shift or any motor noise,as though it would be engaging, when I move the knob.

A local mechanic read a code that said something along the line of 4wd low selector fault..something worded like that, anyways.

OK..turnd out to be the selector motor for low/high on the transfer case.$446 bucks installed.Better than a new Tranny,I guess.
