Heater Core

Hi I'm not real good with cars but id like to replace my heater core or coil myself. It's a 91 chevy cavalier, 2 door, 4 cyllander. I heard it wasn't hard i just need some instructions if anyone can help that would be great! thanks -Veronica If this isn't the problem please let me know. It has the antifreeze smell, and smoke when it's on heat.

It may be more difficult than you think. Look for the heater hoses that head into the passenger compartment from the engine area. Where those hoses head is where the core is. And, I almost bet that you'll also see some A/C tubes heading there too, presuming you have A/C. What you really need to do is give out more info, such as year, engine size, with or sans A/C. Otherwise we are just guessing.

Oh, one possible fast fix [may or may not work] is to put in some radiator stop-leak, such as Bar's. empty out your coolant reservior, and drain about a 1/2 gallon of coolant from your radiator. save the coolant if it still looks good, reuse it. Then, put the Bar's in your reservoir and top the reservoir with the coolant you already drained, but top it with engine running, so the Bar's gets into the cooling system. If a small leak or crack in core, Bar's will seal it. Try it, it may save you major repair. If it doesn't work, only a few bucks and a few minutes used up.
