I changed my own oil!!!

This is probably not a big deal to you guys but it is to me. My G has a darned clean engine that I don't mind touching, so I changed my own oil on Sunday. I had to have my dad help me turn the wrench on the oil pan nut because I have wuss arms, but other than that I did it myself and had one hellofa time getting the darned filter off. But thank goodness it wasn't a Mazda Protege, they keep that oil filter inside the water pump (or somewhere more inconvenient). Anyway, now that I have started I am going to learn some of my own repairs so I won't get ripped of by the mechanics so much. I have been reading up on all kinds of stuff here, thanks for your help.

What'd you use to get the filter off. I bought on of those sockets that fit over the end of the filter for about $11. Makes it easy.

Feels good to do your own maintainance right? Now that you've got your feet wet, you can change the coolant, gear oil, and spark plugs. There's lots of stuff you can do on your own.

Hammer and a screwdriver...I swear, if I ever become an international diamond theif, I'm keeping 'em in there. Or in the water pump. It's hell to get that thing off!

Woulda used one of those socket thingies but my dad only had the big fat Dodge ones.

An oil filter socket for your wrench.

Can get one at any local auto parts store.

Like Boingo said - Or a flat head screw driver and hammer....
Or the brute strength of your hands...

I dunno, I only tighten the oil filter with my hands, and Ive never ran into any problems...
