I wouldn't buy a PS2 again...learned from that mistake. But I would get the older version if you want to hook up the hard drive kit. I head the new version can't be hooked up to a hard drive.

If the only difference is looks, with the money you save buy yourself a game.

Re: what wouldyou get a origanal ps2 or the new ps2?

Id go with the old version, More user friendly plus the hard drive option. Be sure if you get the warrenty to make it "stop working" before the 2 years is up or else it will die shortly after the warrenty expires.

I'd go with a older style BUT get the one with progressive scan.

Re: what wouldyou get a origanal ps2 or the new ps2?

Being out of the loop as far as the PS2 goes, and as I bought my young fella one for x-mas this year, I'm wondering what this talk is about them dying?
2 years? What's up with that?

I just bought a new, regular sized model, core system, one controller, no game...

I didn't research it at all ( except for asking the salesperson if there was any difference between the two other than looks, no ) as I figured it was for the kids and it's "just a console" so what could go wrong? . Now, if it were a computer I would be looking up all kinds of stuff as far as the best ram for the money, which video card etc..

Graphics are ok, but it's the god awful controller ( all console games really as I'm a mouse/keyboard man ) that drives me. Great for driving games, Jax 3 that sort of thing, but for a FPS (First Person Shooter), I really friggin' hate it.

We rented the new Goldeneye for the PS2 last weekend and I really wanted to get into it but I just couldn't as I spent more time going " over..over..ooops too much.. baaack..too much..uuuppp..arrgh!!"

I know with practice I can get used to it, but I'm hearing some things about a mouse/keyboard combo that you can get for the x-box and I'm wondering if maybe there's one for the PS2 as well?

The addition of a hard drive was not a factor for me as I never plan on adding anything like that to it.
Probably get the digital cables to hook it to my other receiver at some time ( the addition of Dolby Digital/ DTS is pretty impressive ).

So as far as the topic goes, I got the regular sized one because I heard that there was no difference except for looks.

I've had my original PS2 since the day the system was releases and haven't had any problems at all. just make sure it's got room to vent excess heat and don't leave it on for prolonged periods of time.

Agreed. I preordered my PS2 and got it the day it came out, not a single problem with it, ever. Hell, both my original controllers work too. I plan on using it past the day PS3 comes out, so don't mind anyone that says it will 'die' after 2 years

i've sat and played Gran turismo and grand theft auto for hours at a time. i have friends that just never turn the system off though, they'll just pause it and turn off the TV. that's probably pretty bad for it.

Re: what wouldyou get a origanal ps2 or the new ps2?

I bought an old PS2 back when they came out, and aside from making a few creaking noises and taking a bit longer to read discs, it still works fine. However, I just bought a new slim one and absolutely love it. You lose the ability to attach a hard drive (as I had done in my old one), but I very rarely ever used it, and it was barely any faster than just reading from the discs. The slim one is barely bigger than a DVD case, which is great, and my personal favorite thing about it is that it has a newer style fan that makes virtually no sound at all, whereas the old PS2 has constant fan noise.

Also, the new PS2 has a manual flip-top cover, rather than an electric sliding tray, so less moving parts, and you can change discs (or take one out) without having to turn the PS2 on then off.

It has the network adaptor built right in, so you have to factor that into the cost difference if you want to play games online - with the old PS2 you will need to buy the network adaptor, which is $30-$50?

Unless you really think you'll need that hard drive, the slim PS2 is by far the better machine.

BTW, since when is the PS2 warranty 2 years? I always thought it was a BS 90 days with the old one, recently lengthened to 1 year on the new ones...
