2004 Tacoma 2.7L to 3.4L engine swap
Alright I finally found a website where maybe someone can help me out. First of all I just want to let everyone know that I love my Taco. It's always been my dream truck and now I've finally got one. I picked this one up brand new in September of 2003. I got all the features that I imagined i'd have. Nothing flashy just the basics. Manual windows & doors, extended cab, and 4X4. The only thing i'm missing is a V-6. Now I didn't pick one up with a V-6 because at the time I didn't have the money to pick one up with both a V-6 and 4X4. So I decided to pick up the 4X4 thinking it would be easier to do a V-6 swap later rather than a 4X4 swap. The truck is still under warranty so a swap won't be in the near future, but a process over time if I decide to do it. My only problem is I can't find any information or How To's on the web. I'm hoping someone can tell me how much it will cost when all is said and done. Keep in mind it will be a project over time due to warranty. But I would just like to know what parts i will need to pick up besides the Engine, Ecu, and Tranny. An items list and maybe some form of how to would be helpful to start my research. Thanks all and any help is appreciated.

Re: 2004 Tacoma 2.7L to 3.4L engine swap
I'm not a Toyota expert but some things that have to be considered on any conversion are are as follows.
1. You mentioned engine, tranny and ECU. 2. You need to know if the frame and motor mounts will fit a V6 or will some fabricationg, cutting and welding be needed. 3. Radiators and water hoses are probably different. 4. Wiring harness in the engine bay is probably different. 5. When you get an engine try to get it complete with alternator, starter and exhaust manifolds. 6. Air cleaner and air inlet boxes are probably different. 7. Exhaust systems are different. 8. I suspect the differential drive ratios are different but that may not be a problem. 9. Front springs for the V6 are probably stiffer than those in the I4. 10. As in any engine conversion you can plan and budget but almost everyone runs over their budget. Just be prepared. 11. If your state requires emissions inspections you may want to talk to someone familiar with emission requirements. You may find that changing engines will prevent the truck from ever passing an OBD II type inspection that many localities require due to the vehicle not matching the computer printout, just a thought. 12. This is a short list, it will get longer as you plan. I have no idea what the cost would be. I do hope some of the things I've mentioned will help. Clifton |
