89 Voyager SE - problems starting/running

I have an 89 Voyager SE 2.5L non-turbo. It has had problems running for almost 8 months now. When starting it was dying almost immediately. Just this week, I had a friend replace the fuel filter and fuel pump but that did not work. We then disconnected the EGR valve and actually got it to run for a minute. My friend figured then it was a problem with either the EGR valve or the back pressure transducer. Last night, tried a replacement transducer and it started up at first. After letting it idle for about 30 seconds, I gave it a little gas and it died out again.

I also have noticed black water-type gunk coming out the tailpipe, especially when revving the engine. Although we will be replacing the EGR valve tonight to see if that is the problem, I have some doubts as to whether that will make much of a difference. If a new EGR valve does not work, could the problem be exhaust-related anyway?

Any help is much appreciated. I am stumped.

Sounds like your exhaust system may be plugged up.

Welcome to electronic fuel injection... its terrible. It could be any vast number of things but I think your on the right track so far. Please read the string as quoted here:

This weekend I checked the distributor cap and the rotor. When taking the cap off I noticed one of the 4 terminals under it didn't look too good. So a new cap is in order - but now when I try to start it the engine cranks but does not even turn over, a bit of a step back from my first post.

When turning the key ON (but not cranking) there is no signal coming from the computer - no check engine light or anything. Plus, I'm not hearing the sound of the fuel pump engaging anymore. Also, I did check out the fusible links by the driver side tower behind the battery. Did the gentle tug on them and they don't stretch like a rubber band. Is it possible by checking these links I may have sent the computer out of whack? Or will I most likely need a new computer?

I beg of you, PLEASE check the voltage of your charging system while idling with the headlights and other accessories on. It is quite possible that your alternator is on the flake and is causing the symptoms you describe. This test costs nothing (assuming you have or have access to a multi-tester) and will tell you in 15-20 minutes of idling if your alternator is the culprit. I've even seen this one misdiagnosed in the pro-shops.

The first thing I did was to check voltage before starting and at 13.2 volts I proceeded st start the engine after a minute the voltage was up to 14.67 volts, so I guess its probably the EGR Valve thats stuck open. It wont idle but it runs good after 1500 rpm. Ill let you know. Thanx Rodeee
