92 ranger heater problems/smoke

Two days ago, I started my 1992 ranger (3.0) and smoke started to come up through the defrost vent. It stopped after a minute, but I thought it was the end for a moment. It smelled awful, but not sure if it was burned wire smell, or leaking/burning coolant from the heater core. There was no sign of coolant on the floor. Since then, I've discovered that my fan control switch only works in full position. Position 1, 2, 3 do not work, but only at full blast. The heat is now only luke warm. I have over 160K on the truck, not losing any coolant from the radiator and the temp gague seems to be dead as well. Ranger runs great otherwise! Also . . the weather down here has been really cold, rainy and damp.

Does anyone out there know where I should start?

I'd appreciate any info.

To all Rangers,

I found out that the smoke was coming from leaves that had gatherd in the blower box. Not sure how they got there yet. Also, my heater switch still only runs in the 'high' position. I found the location of the blower motor resistor and it looks ok, but I may change it anyway. It's located on the left wall of the blower box under the hood, and on the passenger side. Disconnect wires and two bolts, and you can see inside the box and the the burned leaves if you have 'em.
