seatbelt alarm occurs intermittently/ are repairs worth it?
Hi everyone,
Well, this hasn't been a very happy new year for my '89 Merc Grand Marquis... transmission problems (gotta live with it this way), sticking accelerator (repaired), and now, the seat belt alarm "dings" without any apparent reason. It might continue for a week, then stop for a day or two... the steady noise is enough to drive ya nuts... Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it to keep ringing. I've tried doing up all the belts, with or without passengers, without any success. Someone suggested cutting the wire, but I was told this would also disconnect the horn. Can't find the fuse for it, either. Any suggestions? Also - if anyone else has an old girl like mine - can you let me know your opinion on keeping her going much longer? She only has 148,000 kms on the odometer, body is in great condition, purrs along, but this recent string of repairs is worrying me that I'm up for something more expensive next week or month. Anyone have one older than 15 years who can tell me if it's worth it?? thanks |

I don't think the cost of repair to be worth it, and in old cars I have just unplugged the "dinger" and that solves the problem. Of course if there's other electronics issues causing the ding in the first place you may have issues down the road.
Yes, I'm over 15.

Re: seatbelt alarm occurs intermittently/ are repairs worth it?
As suddenly as it started, the noise has now stopped ... which is good, because it was driving me nuts. Now I'm changing my long term plan with this car, which was to keep it going another 5 years anyhow. Now I'm hoping to keep her going until next summer, when the emissions test is due. It would have been great not to have everything start wearing out/breaking down at the same time...
I do love that car, too. thanks for your reply. DLS |
