Question 1997 3000GT VR4 engine coolant problem

HI everybody,

I own a 1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4.The car it’s just unbelievable and I love it, but in the last year I have been dealing with reoccurring problem. I am loosing engine coolant. The car has been in the dealership at least 4 times. They pressurized the system and there aren’t any leaks or faulty gaskets. They changed the radiator cap & thermostat every time but without success. Everything is normal for a week or two and than I have to add coolant every other day. Basically a lot of the coolant is getting transferred in to the overflow tank (and leaking on the ground from there) leaving the radiator half empty
I would appreciate any helpful advice or even an address of a good mechanic in the Detroit Metro area.

Thank you very much, Nick731

Re: 1997 3000GT VR4 engine coolant problem

thats sorta weird... are you sure its going into the overflow tank?... usely it goes into the overflow because its too full. but then if its running low it should suck it back out of the overflow back into the thermostat houseing... there could be a clog or a bad thermostat cuaseing it to flow into the overflow... but that would cause it to over heat very badly. Did you try the water pump? the water pump might be working but leaking or all together not working or going bad... uselly at a 60K and 120K tune ups they will change the water pump and all the belts and what not... so if your geting close to 60K you might try that.

Hey i have that same problem with my 94 SL...leaks into the overflow tank and onto the ground...every other week my little light comes on to add coolant....and had my water pump timing belt done about 10k ago. I wonder if it's just the nature of the car?

That is really strange that you all have the same problem, ive never had that problem before, thats really strange. could a there be air in the system that would cause it to push coolant out as it expands with heat?

Re: 1997 3000GT VR4 engine coolant problem

Well don't be so quick to jump to conclusions...the first poster described his problem...and the troubleshooting he has done...

Nobody else said they even tried replacing the t-stat or radiator cap...so don't all assume you are having the exact same problem. His problem may be a bit more complex, while many of you may be able to fix yours for under $50.
