Unhappy 96 pontiac sunfire jerks..

I have a 96 pontiac sunfire,automatic,2.2. When I'm going over 35 mph it gives a little jerk. Not sure if this is a transmission prob or what.
It doesn't do it all the time. My check engine light is also on. Could this be a motor support prob and if so how do I check it?

The tachometer doesn't move when it jerks,so I'm sure if this is a transmission problem or what.

Is it a 5 spd or auto, what speeds does this happen at a and if 5 spd what gear are you in at that speed? It could be a motor mount on it's way out. Does the motor make a creaking sound when you pull away?

I also smell gas when the heater is on. We think it might be the o rings and are going to replace them. IS THIS A FIRE HAZARD? I can hear gas hitting the manifold and sizzling.

Yes that could become a fire hazard due to the natyure of gasoline. I would fix them straight away but doubt the jerking is due to this as the revs would drop as there wouldn't be as much fuel. But it could be. Actually the tachs on these car don't drop straight away so It may be that it's your injector o-rings. Anyhow fix them ASAP!!!!!!!!
