Advice on good used truck
What is a good engine / tranny combination between 1984 and 1994. I'm looking to buy an older truck w/good condition and high miles, then rebuild the engine. Easier engine to rebuild ? Computer control vs carb ? I'm not looking for lots of power, but good reliability, in a large 4X4.

Re: Advice on good used truck
I will say you should look for a 350, whether it is carb or TBI. 350s make a lot more torque than the 305. I have an 86 k10 with 305 4 bbl and 700r4 trans. The truck had over 200,000 miles when I bought it and by the looks of it the engine and tranny have been there for the majority of those miles. And I beat the crap out of it and it holds up very well. I also have a 97 with 114,000 miles and I have been nothing but impressed with the performance and reliability of this truck.
So I guess just buy what you want. If you find one you like buy it.

Re: Re: Advice on good used truck
Get a truck with a 350 and you should be fine. My uncle has a whole fleet of Chevy trucks with 350s. These trucks range in years from '88 to '94, and they all recieve an almost daily beating, and get very little maintenence. Some of them have over 200,000 miles and will not die.

Re: Advice on good used truck
I wouldn't even consider a 305 for a motor, you might as well get a 262 (4.3L) to get the better fuel economy. The hp and torque specs are very nominal. but the mpg have a pretty significant differance @ $1.98 oer gallon

350's are extreamly easy to rebuild, and the parts are very cheap! (Props to GM for using the same engine since the 60's) If you don't get a 350, it's not a real truck... You also want the extra torque for a 4x4

Re: Advice on good used truck
How about a 6.5 with Peninsular diesel? 300hp and 500 torque? And if you don't like it, ya can give it to me!

Re: Advice on good used truck
I agree 350. 700r4 is a good trans if you take care of it. They are bad about slipping. the 4L60E is a better trans in my opinion. They changed them in 93.
All my truck have a 5.7 or 350 in them and i wouldn't have it any other way.
