Help!!! I have a 96 Dodge Laredo 2wd and the darn ABS light on the dash is always on when the truck is running. My garage guy doesn't know how to fix it and won't give me an inspection sticker until it's fixed. Is there anything short of going back to a dealer that I can do?

Re: abs dashlight
My ABS light came on when I had low brake fluid and went off when I filled it.

It has been explained to me that the brake and abs lights come on, also, during rainy times, to let you know that your brakes are wet, that the ABS has kicked in....they said there is a damp sensor that lets you know that you brakes are wet. To use caution when stopping.
Could this be true, I don't have an owners manual to back this up, been looking for one to review on the net with no luck...can someone direct me to one? |

Check the fuse for the ABS system. On my 1990, the ABS light comes on if the fuse in the abs slot is missing or blown.

i had the same thing with my dodge minivan. We tracked it down to a damp sensor behind the rear wheel. There was another possibility that the wire going from front to back underneath the carpet can rot and short out the electrical. Just a thought for you to maybe check

Re: abs dashlight
not sure about the 96 model year, but on my 99, the ABS light came on when the sensor in the rear axle went bad. but as mentioned above, it's a good idea to check the fuses just to make sure. also, do you have all wheel ABS, or just rear wheel ABS? if you have all wheel ABS, you have 3 sensors, but with rear wheel ABS, you only have one sensor. if the fuses check out ok, then I'd look at the sensor(s).

Take it to the dealer.Daimler Chysler has not realeased any information on their abs systems to the public yet.Basicly, they want the information hush, hush. There is a code stored in the computer.Daimler Chysler's factory scan tool,DRB III is the one one that can read the codes,an aftermarket scan tool can't read the codes

I've never heard this before, are you sure that it is correct? as far as I know, all of the aftermarked tuners, hypertech, superchips, etc.. can pull codes, and I've taken my 99 ram, as well as my wife's 02 jeep(not dodge, but still a DC product) to autozone, and their scanner had no problems at all pulling codes from either vehicle

That is correct,Daimler Chrysler has not released any information on their abs systems to the public.Basically they want the information hush, hush. The scanner at autozone is called a code reader, all it does is read the codes. The only after market scan tool that can read the abs codes is made by Vetronix.Do not trust anyone at Autozone(Really called AutoJunk),they are about 99.9% wrong and are not trained to do computer work.
