Automatic

1998:

All Electric
V6
Sport

There are some issues with transmissions but not all of them have problems. I would stay away from anything with over 100k miles. The SOHC 4.0 can have problems with leaking headgaskets. The engines are more powerful in the 95 and up Explorers. Lots of little things like with any car can happen. Just keep them maintained and you will have good luck with it.

Oh by the way value wise I wouldn't pay over 3500 for the 95 just because of the mileage. The 98 anything under 9 or 10 grand is fair.

Re: Is there any common 95 or 98 explorer problems

I have a 95 ford explorer i had the fuel pump changed about a month ago. ever since i smell gas fumes when idleing, and right after i shut it off. sometimes when i first start it it will run real ruff. I took it back to where i had it fixed he tested the fuel pressure and said it checked out fine. he said it was nothing he did. But somehow I don't really believe him. does anyone have any suggestion or ideas?

I had a similar issue, cept the dealer I bought the vehicle from replaced it. One time when the gas was low I dropped the tank to take a look for the problem. Found the ring that holds the pump assembly in place was rusted to pieces and basically worthless. Recieved the new one installed it( takes special tools to release the lines to the pump assembly) have had no issues since then.
