turboing a 92 240sx

is this engine at all setup for a turbo? i read in another thread that someone told another person to just get a turbo for their 240sx, and the link they gave led to just a turbo instead of a turbo kit.

now if you do need a turbo kit for the car, do you think it would be cheaper to buy the seperate parts rather than buying a whole kit?

Re: turboing a 92 240sx

Yes, the KA24DE is definitely turbo-capable...do a search and you'll probably find a ton of old threads about this stuff. You will need the whole kit, though. You can't just pop the hood, toss in the turbo, and hope for the best. And I believe it would be cheaper to buy the seperate parts and put it together yourself. That way you can get exactly what you want too.

Re: turboing a 92 240sx

check out www.boostdesigns.com they have kits ranging from something like 230whp to 500whp kits.. that'll give you an idea of what you'll need.. and yeah normally its cheaper to piece a kit together.. you can also pick and choose what you want and don't want, whereas in a kit, you get what you pay for. the stock internals will support up to about 260whp i think so unless you're serious about your power, you'll be fine.. just make sure you have good compression in each cylinder. thats very important when adding a forced induction system.. read up on how turbos work at www.howstuffworks.com i found that very simple to understand when i was first learning..

yea, ive read that before too and i do have a general idea on how turbos work. i have a question on piecing together a turbo. i know by looking at turbo kits what i should get, but fitting a turbo for a sepcific engine, are you really just making sure that it will fit? such as make sure the pieces you get are 35mm? and other than that you have to make sure they can withstand a certain pressure, and from there you just buy seperate pieces?

Re: turboing a 92 240sx

well for the 240, there are a few turbos that are ka-sized-engine specific.. so no, you don't have to worry about that.. what you DO need to worry about is how much power you want going to the wheels.. the more power, the more money.. garett has always made good turbos that are very efficient and durable.. the t3/to4e is a huge turbo so it'll spool up at a higher rpm than say a t28.. so basically you look for either lots of top end power or a good amount of all-round power (by that i mean you'll get boost through a wider rpm range).. one is usually sacrificed for the other.. the turbo itself isn't the part you have to put together though.. you need to choose an exhaust manifold, downpipe and exhaust to start with.. there's a ton of other turbo threads with reccomendations for basic turbo setups.. check those out and you'll have a better idea

Re: turboing a 92 240sx

Answer the following:

1)How much power do you want?

2)What RPM do you want to make power

3)How much do you want to spend?

Good condition stock internals can hold 300-350whp daily driven with a good tune. I wouldn't try it without a JWT ECU for the timing control or some other form of timing control besides knocking back base timing. Stock internals don't give out from too much power until about 400whp.

Re: turboing a 92 240sx

id just like to take off faster at lower rpm's. i drive mostly in the city, so if i can boost around 3000-3500 thatd be great.

Re: turboing a 92 240sx

www.boostdesigns.com has a great kit for you. It will give you the quick spool you want with peace of mind of a 1 year warranty.

Turbos are not car specific, but more engine specific. They are desinged to put out a set amount of air with a set amount of propulsion. Some range very broad, some very narrow. I believe the turbo you are looking for is a T3/T04E with a 50trim wheel. Nice broad range, quick spool, and pretty capable.

EDIT: Thanks Hit N Run

Re: turboing a 92 240sx

i just have a quick question. i know if you turbo some cars, you will need to change the transmission to handle that extra power. is that true of the 240sx also?

Re: turboing a 92 240sx

no, you might want to get a stronger clutch to handle more power. But i dont see why you would want to buy a new tranny, what brand makes aftermarket trannys for the KA?
