Error code 43 what does this mean?

Greetings 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8 Fulltime 4WD owner check engine light started coming on last week. I did the on/off code thing and code 43 came up. Can anyone tell me what 43 means or where I cane go on the web to see what code 43 means? Hope it is a easy fix! Thanks for any help!

Code 43 - Battery tempature sensor volts malfuction. Problem with battery tempature voltage cicuit in the PCM.


If I am correct, The battery tempature sensor is located directly under the battery mounted on the battery box (plate). It measure the tempature of the battery to allow the adjustment to the altenator to produce more output (cold) or less (hot) depending on the tempature of the battery. You may want to check the wiring that runs from the sensor to the PCM.

Just recieved an e-mail from another party stating:

it means the following:
43 Peak primary coil current not achieved with max dwell time
OR
43 Cylinder misfire
OR
43 Problem in power module to logic module interface

I'm confused?

Did this person say these codes were specifiv to Jeeps. The Code 43 right out of the jeep repair manual is what I mentioned above.

43= Multiple Cylinder Misfire or Ignition coil #1 primary circuit
First thing to look at is Plugs and wires they are the main things for multiple missifire. Could be coil too try plugs and wires first.

your right, I wasn't looking at the OBD II codes (96 and later) I was looking at the Pre - OBD II

Hello again, My 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee is having some problems when I initially start it up. It has a very rough idle and when I start to drive there is some hesitation for about a blcok or two. After that it runs fine. I checked the 'check engine' light ignition trick and Im getting 43 twice and then 55. Error Code 43 = Peak primary circuit current not achieved with maximum dwell time. Misfire detected in one or more cylinders. What does this mean? I plan on changing the spark plug wies and possibly the coil this weekend. I changed the spark plugs around 10,000 miles ago, but may do them as well. I have seen a couple posts refering to the IAC motor and the throttle body not being clean. Where are these located and how can I clean them? Also could the 43 have been caused from something other then , plugs, wirres, coil? Thanks everyone for your help once again!

The throttle body is on the center and top of the engine. It is the replacement for the old carburetor. The IAC Motor is bolted to the back of the Throttle Body with a torker screws. I usally clean them with a tooth brush and carb cleaner or laquer Thinner.

Thanks Cam7, do you usually remove these before cleaning, or take any bolts/torque screws out to clean? Also any idea about the 43 error code above? Im hoping its not the injectors that are bad, how hard are they to change?Thanks

You will have to take off the bolts on the IAC Motor to clean it . Carbon builds up in plunger. Code 43 means that more than one cylinder has a miss. Sometimes one cylinder can cause this code to set. Had it happen on my 96 5.2. Had a bad plug but was looking everywhere else. The Injectors aren that hard to remove just depressurize the fuel system and un bolt the Fuel Rails and pull the injector out of the intake manifold. You can test them without removing them. Connect a Ohm meter across the injector terminals. A good injector should read around 14.5 + - 1.2 ohms at 70 degrees.

The 43 code is a misfire code. If you can get a scanner that will read OBDII codes you would see something like P0300 to P0308. P0300 is misfire , P0301 to P0308 will be the cylinder that has the miss. P0301 is cyl 1, P0302 is cyl and so on. Battery sensor code is 44 or P01492/P1493 with OBDII scanner. With the test you are doing with key code 55 just means end of test. You need a OBDII scaner to get the OBDII codes and not generic code. Now with a misfire you have to find what has cause the misfire. Yes a injector can cause this but the computor is also able to detect bad injectors. A ohm meter is a good tool but not perfect. Sometime the best thing is a lab scope. But if you ould find which cyl has the misfire you could swap injectors from another cyl and see if miss follows the injector.

i was wondering if you had ever found the solution to this problem my 96 caravan has been doing this for over a year now. the injectors ohm out within 1 of each other and the plugs, wires, and coil are all new. is this really an injector problem?
