WIP 1:24 Tamiya MB CLK-GTR in D2 livery

Here are a few pics of my work in progress on the Tamiya 1:24th Mercedes Benz CLK-GTR in D2/Warsteiner livery. The engine cover was glued to the body (I do this to all my racecars to help with poor fitting body parts) and then sprayed with Tamiya white primer, Tamiya TS-17, Nason(PPG) 2-part automotive clear and rubbed and buffed out using a combination of Micro-Mesh polishing cloths and Mequiar's cream polishes.

SMS CF decals were used to cover the cockpit and side vents, the seat and head rests were flocked in black and additional wiring was run to the ECU's and shifter.

Engine detail is just beginning and since the bay is visible in this car (and the Nissan R390) I'll try and add as much as possible without getting things too cluttered. The orange flex hoses were detailed with BMF straps and conectors.

The engine air inlet was painted TS-29, overcoated with acrylic gunmetal sprayed thru some pantyhose material and sealed with Future (as was the chassis and the rear wing).

Windscreen details were picked out with a metallic Sharpie pen and the process of washing the panel lines has begun.

The reason I like to glue the various panels onto the cars shows in the above pic. The silhouette shows the agressive lines of the CLK perfectly.

I had originally painted the model with Duplicolor primer, but it ended up crazing the surface...DOH!

and after a nice long dunk in the Castrol Super Clean tub and then hours upon hours of sanding I was able to turn it into a decent product.

Above is a closeup of the result of shooting tamiya gunmetal onto TS-29 thru pantyhose material. It'sot perfect, but is a little more subtle and random than a CF decal and for me, more economical on large, flat surfaces.

Thanks for looking and expect the completed pics soon..or eventually!

Bill

Beautiful, the silhouette of this car and the 911 GT1 are amazing when done right. This one looks really sharp.

Thanks guys for all the great comments!

Phil, whew...I was getting worried there for a sec...diecast is almost a dirty word...

TS, the F1 modelers used that trick before SMS/Modellers/et al started creating CF decals.

Great car! Great Model! That thing is coming out great Bill! The pantyhose CF looks great, I'll have to borrow some of my mother Pantyhose to try it out!<Just kidding. Thats wayyy better than die-cast! I have the 1:18 scale Maisto Street Version of this car and this car looks a million times better!

Very very impressive build indeed & leaving it wingless was a wise move as it looks even more intimidating without it.
Im getting mine going soon (Sportswear version) & i'll be checking regularly on your pic's for a little reference if you dont mind.
