hrmm...eclipse aint that fast

ok i know what all of your eclipse guys are thinking but listen to this. a friend of mine from highschool showed up to my buddys house and this being the first time for us to see the car i told him to take me for a ride, and we left the others back at the house. so i put him on the track we have set up thats basicly exactly a quarter mile.

he set up revved up and launched, spun halfway through first and bogged out but soon recovered and yanked a 17.5 quarter. he said that wasnt his best run so he ran it again. about 18.3 but i felt bad so i told him high 17. soo we went back to the house and since he was feeling small he decided to impress us with his system, which was nothing to sneeze at. so after much gawking, we decided to set up a race.
*backstory*
my buddy has had 10 cars and hes a senior in h.s. now hes got a 97 dodge dakota. now this truck was brand spankin new with only about 45000 miles. within 4 months the truck has absolutely no exhaust apart from manifolds, the tranny is pretty much gone, no reverse, motor is rusted beyond belieif from rust, dented, gone though 2 sets of tires. this truck is how you say BEAT. so the eclipse kid agrees. we pile into the 2 cars and head to the track.
the track is a straight peice of road 2 lane, kinda thin, not bumpy, and set up exactly to a 1/4 mile with paint. we set up, both kids rev their motors we say go, they take off. the dakota takes the lead and takes it hard as the eclipse hardly spins. into 2nd the eclipse goes off the bumper of the dakota it stays until the 1/4 end. now tell me is that not embarasing or what. the dakota is 3.9 btw but still i never knew eclipses were that slow i always thought they were kinda quick but hrmm... well in short after that i raced the camaro once again and beat yet another import by over 5 car lenghts. but thats another story

its a ashamed cause you beat an eclipse, not a DSM. those eclipse that you beat weights 3000 lbs are FWD, and makes a whooping 140hp from the 420A engine also found in the older dodge neons.

the true eclipses or eagle talons are called DSM's ( even though that eclipse you beat is still considered a DSM, but no body would ever refer to them as a DSM ).

anyways the true DSM's stock aren't that impressive either. they make 220hp in a 3000 lb car ( for the GST front wheel drive version ) and around 3100 lbs for the GSX ( the turbo AWD version ).

however they can be made quick with very little invested becasue of hte turbo engine. the first gen DSM's came with a 14B turbo which with bolt ons such as intercooler, down pipe, exhuast, intake and boost controller, you can hit low 13's easy.

those engines can handle 400hp no problem as long as you have the proper fuel system and have a turbo large enough to flow that much air.

most worked DSM's are in the 12's to 11's.

Re: hrmm...eclipse aint that fast

you gotta be more specific about which eclipse it is...I don't even know what YEAR eclipse you were talking about, nevermind the trim level...could you be a little more specific, please?...BTW I would still consider the 2nd gen talon/eclipse DSM, because it was a joint platform shared by the diamond(mitsubishi) and the star(eagle).

nah i wasn't talkin about the 2nd gen not considered being DSM's. i'm talkin about the RS and GS eclipse. when people say DSM they usually refer to a GST or GSX. or a AWD TSi.

and since he said the car ran a 17's i'm 100% positive its a GS or RS becuse there is no way a turbo eclipse will run those times unless the turbo is totally shot.

Re: hrmm...eclipse aint that fast

Oh yeah and one more thing....how did you time the car in the 1/4 mile...by stopwatch? Because that's even more inaccurate(sp) than my g-tech, lol....so the DSMs are only the FAST eclipsii and talons? Discrimination!

well of course Hanh's racecraft makes a turbo kit for the 420A powered eclipses, however the fastest 420A powered eclipse i've seen is only in the 11's and this is the shop car of hanh's racecraft. considering the fact that an average can get a DSM in the 11's with alot less money put in then a RS or GS i don't see it as anything special.

i've have sat in a turboed GS and the car didn't feel that fast, but aparently it ran a 14.0 i was amazed. i thougth it felt kinda slow.

Re: hrmm...eclipse aint that fast

if you're talking about the 3rd generation 4banger eclipses then YES they are slow including the older 4banger NA eclipses, even the new GT eclipse is a joke and I've had to drive one around for a few months now but I'm saving up for a nice 2g gsx to mod and those are no joke.

How did you measure the 1/4 mile? he ran on a street that is kinda a quarter mile right? unless its 1320 mark to mark then thats not a quarter! and who the heck ever said a 4cyl n/a eclipse was fast? I dont think they even make 140 hp, more like 130.

They are welcomed as DSMs.

Stop the N/T Hatred Campaign 2005

That being said, the thread starter raced some form of light/no-mods eclipse N/T. Big deal.

haha no biggy i always kinda liked eclipses and thought they were fast since that day. but i guess not. the eclipse was a 95 a fast and furious style. non turbo in turbo trim i think they call it gsx. yeah we timed it via stop watch haha its exactly a quarter mile, at least what the odoemter on the car red. but im not worried about it. ill get some good racing stories on the board soon as soon as we thaw out.

Re: hrmm...eclipse aint that fast

learn about the car, a gsx is a turbo and a 17.5 quarter?? you definatley raced a n/t, try racing a gst or gsx with a few bolt on mods and you'll change your mind about eclipses pretty damn quick

Re: hrmm...eclipse aint that fast

GSXs are pretty quick off the line. But it seems like they don't have enough to keep backing it up.
