Engine revving when turbo kicks in

I own a Toyota MR2 Turbo and it has recently been revving when the Turbo kicks in. For example, when I am on the highway and hit the accelerator, when the turbo kicks in it is like someone pushes the clutch in a bit, or the car is coming out of gear. It quickly goes back to normal when the turbo goes out again.

Does anyone have a hypothesis about what might be going on and if so, what I can do to fix it. The car was out of my hands for a few years and in that time some clutch work was done, which I think might be to blame, but am not a mechanic.

Thanks in advance for any help posted!!

Re: Engine revving when turbo kicks in

Your clutch could very well be slipping. Does it do it in first gear when you step hard on the gas?

Re: Engine revving when turbo kicks in

I will have to try it in first, but it definitely happens in other gears, usually only when the turbo also kicks in. If the clutch is slipping, is it something that can easily be fixed?

Re: Engine revving when turbo kicks in

It sounds like clutch is definitely slipping under power.

This is usually from the clutch is worn (most common). The clutch could have worn faster than expected if the proper break-in procedure on teh new clutch was not done. Typically you should drive 500 miles onthe clutch in regular stop-n-go traffic without "launching" it.

If they installed the clutch without turning down (resurfacing) the flywheel, that could also cause the two to not mate really well.
