Fuel Flow Problems

I have a 95 Chevy ZR2 4WD Pickup 4.3 Vortec. Within the last couple of days I have noticed a rough idle at start up, but by the time I got it into gear it was fine.
Today on the highway on my way home it cut out, took off again, cutout, then died. I was only a mile from home (man...life is great). I pulled off the side of the road and it would not start again, just turned over no fire. After getting a tow home I decided to check the spark, it was fine. I then decided to change the fuel filter since I had a brand new one in my toolbox that I hadn't changed out yet (wow that's a blast...who the heck drew that design up?) After changing the filter I tried once again to start the truck...no change, turns over no fire. I took the air intake off and poured some gas into the intake, not knowing for sure what this would do and it fired off and died, tried it again, same thing.
I replaced the filter, I have spark, fuel pump runs and flows fuel, why won't this truck run?

I am thinking fuel pressure regulator, but where is it and what doies it look like?
...Any suggestions?

Man I am getting sick of this truck...

Re: Fuel Flow Problems

The "MIL" is the Malfunction Indicator Light aka Check Engine light. It really doesn't *do* anything but indicates your engine management computer has logged a malfunction code. To find out what the code is, you need to access the engine computer and download the code (with the help of an expensive little gizmo). This is what the mechanics will usually do first to get them pointed in the right direction.

If this were my truck, I'd bite the bullet and have it taken to either the dealer or a good independent shop. From your troubleshooting, it seems as if the engine is not getting fuel. My first reaction would have been the same; replace the fuel filter. I would suspect your fuel pump is not putting out enough pressure to fire the injectors. The fact this condition changed gradually over time would lead me to suspect the pump. There's another post on this board... it's new so it's near the top of the list... about this same sort of situation. The fuel pump checked okay for pressure at idle, but couldn't provide enough pressure to run the engine otherwise. I would replace the fuel pump and see if doesn't clear up the situation and if not, time to cry "uncle" and let the "pros" have a crack at it. I believe you have a more sophisticated fuel injection system than the regular 4.3L throttle body system. In short, there are special tools needed to fully troubleshoot a fuel injection system and there may be some other components involved (possibly a fuel shutoff relay or something else along those lines) that only a trained mechanic should be able to check.

Good luck...

Mike

Re: Fuel Flow Problems

the tool is like a hundred bucks at autozone and covers everything made since 96. if you can get the truck there theyll pull the codes for free. it costs about 85 bucks for you to go to the dealer to get the codes, while its free at autozone, or you can buy the tool yourself for a hundred, and coax free beer out of you buddies in excange for using the tool.

Re: Fuel Flow Problems

Check the posting titled "96 won't start".... I think this might help.

Check fuel pressure.

Do you have the orange vortec name plate on the top of your engine?
