Does it attempt to upshift and flare or slip? Or just stay firmly stuck in second with no indication it is trying to shift?

Re: 4T60E not shifting

functions normally, upshifts , downshifts, reverse. All work great, it just does not want to shift past 2nd gear no matter what range you put it in.

HI, look at the forum pontiac transport. There is some info about what you can try.

Tom.

My memory is getting really fuzzy on the older ones. Did they have a transhift cable off the throttle on that year? That's all that comes to mind when I think of no attempt to upshift, but has a 1-2 shift. Externally, anyway.

4T60E shifting problem

The E in 4T60E stands for electronic control. There is four solonoids under the side cover that are controled by an electronic control module. These control your shifting. I think I would start with the ECM. A good shop with the proper test equipment could tell you if the ECM is working properly. Good Luck!

Re: 4T60E not shifting

In that case, I'd be checking those connections and giving those solenoids a whack, just for good measure.

Checking electrical connections

Yeah Jeff you could check the Plug-in connection for pushed pins or corrosion. I'm not sure how much voltage is supplied to activate those solonoids or if they are activated by grounding. Be carful.

I had this problem once as well. The Service manager at a local GM dealer had me check three things:

1. Brake pedal. Check to make sure the pedal is not misadjusted (due to years of use) and actuating the vacuum switch attached to it.

2. Fuel Filter. Sounds crazy but if the fuel filter is clogged or clogging it will cause the engine to run lean and not let the transmission shift into a higher gear that might cause bogging.

3. Valve body. If the transmission is NOT shifting down into first gear just before you come to a stop and if it seems as though it is starting you out in a higher gear than first gear, you probably have an issue with the valve body and the transmission will need work.

My issue was a clogged fuel filter. I started changing it every 15,000 miles instead of every 30,000 miles. Never had this problem again. That was 98,000 miles ago and we now have 227,565 miles and still going STRONG!!!!

Hope this helps!
