97 Jetta won't start...

My son's 97 Jetta won't start. Engine turns over, sounds good. Just won't start. Suspect fuel pump? Any trouble shooting hints would be appreciated. I don't have alot of experience or tools. Generally just fumble through until I succeed or really tear something up.

Spark check is easy, fuel pressure check only requires a simple gauge. That's the easiest to start with.
