Can you please put these computers in order.

I've come to the conclusion that I need a damn good computer, but something with great graphical power. I would go the "build yourself one" route, but I'm looking at getting a complete desktop. Now my decision is based more on graphical power, add-ons in future and reliability so I've came to these companys. So if you were to get one tommorow, put them in order from 1-5 to which you'll buy of you best knowledge.

- Dell
- Compaq
- E-machine
- Heward Packard (HP)
- Gateway

Re: Can you please put these computers in order.

Compaq's suck. i've had a presario that was the biggest piece of shit. i have a gateway laptop that i think is awesome, and my dad's got a dell that is also a quality machine.
So my preference goes:
1)Gateway
2)Dell
3)Emachine(can't honestly say i've heard of them, but it can't be worse than a compaq)
4)HP(now owns compaq)
5)Compaq

if you're looking for a sick desktop that can be upgraded later look into Alienware they make some powerful systems that also look awesome.

Re: Can you please put these computers in order.

Here's my list for computer companies:

1. Alienware
2. Sony
3. Dell
4. Gateway
5.
6.
7. HP
8. Compaq

HP and Compaq are so far behind the others IMO that there had to be some space there and I've never heard of eMachines.

Well mine works great, and I don't have 2,300 bucks to buy an Alienware. (I wish)

from 1 to 5, 5 being the worst -

1. Compaq
2. Heward Packard (HP)
3. Gateway
4. Dell
5. E-machine

E Machine only makes entry level PC's (you actually have to pay to upgrade to a Pentium 4, a Celeron comes standard, which is basically a P4 with down syndrome)

Dell makes okay PCs but they use second grade or older parts, that's why they're so cheap. The only thing I would buy from Dell would be their 5 channel computer speaker system - It POUNDS.

Gateway's are little better than Dell's in that they use better parts - some their higher end models have awesome graphics cards, but are way too expensive.

HP's are bascially the same as most Compaqs, but still have that ugly ass lumpy case that looks like a gray bird turd.

I chose Compaq as number becasue of overall value - the ones made after 2001 are a very good value - You save more money getting a Presario and buying an aftermarket video card than blowing your load on an Alienware.

My computer works great and performs great for an E-Machines (although its a athlon), only thing it needed was more ram and a new video card.

You need to buy everything separately and build your own.
OEMs aren't really good for too many upgrades.

Re: Can you please put these computers in order.

Having someone put one together for you would be good but the real question is do you need professional graphics power? Probably not unless you are a graphic artist doing things like CMYK color separations then expect to pay on the order of $2500 for a decent graphics card alone.

For the rest of us that want graphics power for gaming you simply need to have a motherboard with a AGP slot and spend $2-400 for a good 256MB video card. Go for a gig of RAM and you got it covered.

The only good pre-builts out there, like Alienware & Falcon, cost more than they're worth. My advice, build your own.

I would go Dell for a prebuilt machine only because they are much better quality than a compaq or Hp and they have amazing customer support.

however if you want to build your own, you can find something called a bare bones kit on the web. They usually include:

-case
-power supply
-mother board
-possible onboard sound and video cards
- small amount of memory

then to get it up and running you would need:

-hard drive
-maybe some more memory
-cd/dvd drive of choice
-video card and sound card if it is not onboard the m/b
-monitor
- and of course an operating system.

I built a computer this way about 4 years ago and it is still faster and smoother than many that compaq and HP and even dell have to offer for the price.

edit: all in all I spent about 1,500 on it and thats including LCD monitor.

specs are:

intel mother board, 1.7 Ghz Pentium 4 processor, 640 mb ram ,80 gig hard drive. 64 mb Nvidia4 video card... some other stuff I can't remember also.

I'll see if I can find all the old websites I used to buy stuff from.

Re: Can you please put these computers in order.

If I was you, I woudl build my own. I woudl put a 64 bit AMD chip on it, (for when Windows Longhorn comes out). 2gb DDR PC2700(??) Ram, 10,000rpm Hard drive, and a 512mb DDR Radeon graphics card....Atleast that is what I would do.
If you don't know how to build one, Im sure someone you know, knows how....
