Talking Lets all overclock!

Overclocking is fun Unfortunately, on my moms comp, the bios doesn't support overclocking
But the motherboard for my dads future comp does (in nice 1mhz increments, which is even better!)

Now, what is overclocking?:
Overclocking is when you tell the processor to do more than it is supposed to do. This makes it faster. You should have a massive heat sink and fan, though, or the extra heat could melt the CPU, creating a several-hundred-dollar piece of jewelery. Also, each chip has its fail point. When you buy, say, a 1ghz CPU, Intel may have tested it and found it would work up to 1.31ghz before failure: ie, it wouldn't work right and would crash, necessitating a reboot. But you don't know the failure threshold, and if you brougt it up to 1.3ghz, it might work fine, but if you brought it up to 1.35ghz, it might start crashing. So just keep adjusting it, and once you've found the limit, tone it down about 5%, just to be safe and trouble free. And Don't overclock if you dont need to (ie, you will only be using Corel Wordperfect, or solitare, during that session)
To overclock, go into startup when you boot the computer (usually just press delete of F1 alot). Once there, find the overclocking option, and adjust it. Then save and exit

So, how much do you overclock?

Sometimes, overclocking too high can cause massive problems. I've heard rumors that GeForce cards do not like overclocking...

Well when you overclock the CPU you overclock the PCI and AGP bus as well. There is no way o cool them. Which is why I don't, because I only have a 6x multiplyer I could get maybe 50MHz before risking damage. But say a P3 with a 100MHz bus, they have an 8x miltiplyer so they can overclock much higher.

I don't think overclocking is as common anymore, because the processors are so fast now. Not at least like the old days when everybody was getting a 300 MHz Celeron and taking it to 500

This would explain why my screen went black when I used the gigabyte supplied software to wind my 950 duron up to 1100mhz.

Geforce1 DDRS are the only ones that really like to be overclocked. I got another 15FPS in Quake 3 when I overclocked mine.

I soft o/clocked my Celeron 500 to 566 (off the top of my head) but then it locked.

I won't over clock my Athlon 1.4 at all as it runs at 56 degrees as it is with a volcano HSF and 2 extraction fans cut into the case. Maybe if I decide to watercool I'll do it, but I'm not really into it anymore.

Yea, when I had a PCI video card (16mb Voodoo 3), my screen was always black. I couldn't even get to the BIOS to change it back But, there was a jumper on the mobo to restore default settings, so all was well.
Now, it just doesn't like it. I think the RAM is the problem, as windows starts to load, but never finishes. That was overclocking my system bus (max, 1.91 ghz on my Athlon XP 1800).
Then I just switched my CPU VCORE SELECT. It starts a 6, and goes to 14, giving a range of 800 to 1860 mhz cpu at stock system speeds (total, 2.3ghz CPU. Which would probably kill it, as it is 50% higher than stock) I was thinking of keeping it a 13, giving me 1.73 (200mhz higher). I have a ThermalTake 7, copper fins with a 53cfm fan on it. And the chipset has a heatsink and fan. It is weird though, because windows and startup don't recognize the processor as being faster. So I am leaving it on 'default' for now till I figure out what is wrong. So I will leave it overclocked a measly 40mhz for now

Thanks dill hole, i hit f2 to get into setup (windows me), got a keyboard failure and it screwed up the mouse. I was actually gonna "underclock" because my video card has been goofin since got a new format for it.

The only reason I can think that happened is if you have a wireless keyboard. Otherwise, I would suggest just setting a jumper to restore default BIOS settings if you really want to underclock it.

Well, 120 F is about as hot as you want to get. Celerons handle overclocking very well.

BTW, I just read your sig.

That 14X faster is the speed your CPU is told to run in relation to the bus. You probably have a 100mhz bus, so yours would be 8X by default. So 14X would be 1.4ghz, or 1400mhz.

PS, I know someone with an 800 that runs a 1100. But thats just him.
