1996 transfer case lever cable ?'s

I have a 1996 2dr ls automatic tranny with the manual transfer case, the lever on thee floor to shift into 4wd. I accidently past 4x4 and it got stuck in nuetral. I had a hard time getting out and must have pulled up on the lever the knob started to come off and a long spiral rod popped out, almost looked like a dipstick with the twisted end. It was dark and late at night I pushed it all back down and it shifted back to 2wd. now if I try to shift while moving it seems to grind and not want to engage. Does anyone have info on replacing or adjusting this cable ? Thanks for all replies.

You will have to buy a repair manual to aid in your repair.

Also, please be patient with it next time instead of yanking on it with extreme force. As you can see, it will cause more problems than what you had in the first place.
