does this seem like a good deal/insurance

hey everyone, im looking at getting a vr4 found a pretty nice one on ebay. here is the link
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MakeTrack=true
it seems nice... seems. lol, any way anyone have any experience with buying a car off ebay, i have looked around my town, and there are no vr4's for sale.
also does anyone know how much insurance i will be paying on the vr4? it will be a joint insurance i have a clean driving record, took the AAA driving class, have the good student thing, but here come the bad things, i am 17, and a male.

would you guys recomend getting this car, i work full time making 6:70 an hour(on top of school) and i am going to be going to college next year. by then my pay should be around 7.50 though. and ill probily have 2 jobs during the summer, either that or i'll be at boot camp for the guard. ok thanks everyone

Let me answer your last question first. I do not reccomend that you buy this car. You do not earn enough to afford it and go to college. Don't put yourself in a hole like that.

However, if you are set on getting it, you could go to progressive.com and get a quote to give you an idea of what insurance would run. As for the car, just go to make the deal in person.

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

First off it says it's being sold as is...no warranty...so unless you check it out, test drive it, and have a mechanic check it out, there is no way in hell you should bid on it.
If you want a vr4, check www.autotrader.com, www.3si.org, www.cars.com, and keep your eyes and ears open on this board, I wouldn't buy a car on ebay, I'd only use ebay to locate it, and then I'd deal with the seller directly.

2. Vr4s are expensive to own, expensive to insure, expensive to maintain. There are hundreds of threads of potentially new owners looking to buy a vr4...and every one gets the same answers from the majority of us. It isn't a good starter car, and it isn't easy to afford while in college (trust me, my gas tank and refridgerator are both always empty). Do a search for "vr4 AND first car" in this forum and you will see.

As far as insurance everyone's is different, but typically expensive. I'm 21 with a clean record and every deduction you mentioned and about 10 more, and I'm still paying $2500 a year; when I first got it, they quoted my $5,000. There is a section in the FAQ regarding insurance which you should check out.

You are getting killed on your insurance. That kinda scares me because I am in Abington which is fairly close to Philly. Hopefully, my insurance isn't that high or I'll have to turn around and sell my car. Then again, Philly insurance is almost double what us suburb people pay. I was curious if your statement about VR4's (them being expensive to maintain) could be said about all 3000GT's and Stealths.

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

I'm insured in Binghamton NY...and I definantly know where abington is...my mom teaches in their Jr. High. As far as insurance, I'm not getting killed on it...the second they quoted me 5 grand, I got tons of deductions and got it down to 3,000. But for being 21, male, in NY, with a vr4 as the primary car, unless I switch to a no-name tiny insurance company then it wont get much better. I searched with my agent, and Progressive was the best we found. However, come May, I will be moving back to Philly, and might get it switched to being insured in Horsham.

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

what is wrong with going with a no name insurance polocy? also, why would this car be to expensive? i plan on selling my current car (94 ford probe gt) for around 2,200, and this summer i will make well over 5 thousand. soo, there is the car payments. i don't know why you are all paying so high for insurance, i am currently paying 50 a month for my pgt. are you saying this car is expensive in maintenance? im getting college payed for (scholarships and financial aid) and my parents are going to try and help me with my dorm and everything, but while im going to college ill be making 1000 a month. i know i am pretty stuborn, but i just love these cars. but thanks everyone for your input. also, are you guys paying for full coverage? i'd just get liability probily. any way, thanks

-tom
p.s. how do you mean put myself in a hole? when i get out of college, ill be making atleast 36,000 a year, from being an officer in the AF. and then i plan on becoming a pilot, so technicly, in about 10-15 years, i could be making around 300,000 a year! pretty good for some one who started working at mc donalds eh.

College is expensive. Glad to hear you have scholarships and others are going to chip in. These cars are great and they are expensive to insure. Call your current agent and ask. If you can swing it, then more power to you. I just warn against digging a financial hole before you actually have a full time well paying job.

As for making 300K a year. I wish you well, but don't count your chickens before they hatch.

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

hey, yea well everyone can dream cant they, haha, key words could be. haha, i think i should be able to do it though, but im not to sure about driving all the way to indiana, where the car is,(about a 6-7 hr drive) and finding out the car is just a pos. any way the seller seems a little suspicious, he used some of the exact pictures from the guy who supposidly sold it to him on ebay, and then i e-mailed for some more pics, and he said his brother took the pictures that were on the web now, and he doesn't have a digital camera... hmm what do you guys think about this?

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

yeah 93 would be the best of the first gens, forged internals..something with the splines on the driveshaft i believe...as far as insurance goes, it IS high for a 3000GT especially VR4, a probe GT is a pos and the insurance company knows it so thats why it's cheap on insurance...I'm paying full coverage on my SL and it's just under $100 a month..but before I turned 21 it was over $300 a month...now you make that a VR4 and it's thru the roof. Now i'm not saying you can't do it...because i'm about to do the same thing, VR4, College, the whole bit. Just saying don't expect it to be like owning a Probe GT. Premium gas and under 20 mpg can hurt after a while, if you're not prepared for it.

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

hey don't be dissin the probe, lol, jk, yea i have had way to many problems with the probe, but it has helped me learn how to drive a manual, and basicly it was the first car i actually cared about. but at the rate i have been going, i could be making the payments for a vr-4, or be replacing a bunch of stuff that keeps going wrong w/ the probe. how much would just liability insurance be? i can't get a quote from my mom's insurance, so i may have to go alone on the insurance. id be screwed wouldn't i.

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

Quick tip, depending on where you live, the 3000gt/stealths are urban exotics and therefor subject to higher rates than normal cars with the same cc's.

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

Ok, now that I'm home, I hear to clear up some misconceptions with insurance

1st of all, for the person who's paying 50/month. Well duh, that's liability only. get a quote for a vr4 with full coverage and then see what you will be paying.

2nd of all, insurance is different for different zip codes. Igo is paying 5k/year cuz he's in NY. HELLO, IT'S NEW YORK. I live in Iowa and insure my vr4 with full coverage AND a 2nd vehicle for about 1450/year. Location makes a big difference.

3rd of all, NEVER go with a no name company. NEVER. there are too many reasons why not to. Go with a company that's known.

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

ok, who would you reccomend for insurance? i am also from the midwest(nebraska), so i hope my payments will be lower... PLEASE GOD! lol, after i get the car paid off i would probily switch to just liability, but being 17, almost 18, m, and on my own policy, is the price going to be outragious? i have a clean record, not one ticket, not even a warning! im still going to be screwed... right? please tell me no. lol, dang insurance!!!

Re: does this seem like a good deal/insurance

AHHH! i just got my quote, for full coverage, it is 3,500 a year, but liability is 1500. this is rediculous! i would be paying more insurance then i would on my car, how do you guys do it! the stupid thing is, that the sl is about the same price as the vr-4. sheista. well it looks like my hopes are smashed. guess im stuck with the pos probe, that i need to reset the ecu every 3 times is drive it. lol. ohh well, that's life. thanks everyone. enjoy your freaking cars, lucky bastards, haha.
