VR6 motor swap

hey, i was looking around the forum asn saw something mentioned on swapping a VR6 for the stock 944 mill. normally i would just pass this bit of info by, but cosidering what ive seen done to a gold gti with the 6, it caught my attention. a buddy of mine has one and it has very minimal mods engine wise and puts out a very respectible number. the car is plenty fast enough to beat a new vette by a car lengh or two in the 1/4. the thing sounds more like a steam catapult then an internal combustion, but wow... so, what would be involved in that swap? what lines upm if anything? can i reuse anything like clutch bell, motor mounts, radiator, torque tube? and how much of a weight differnence will i be looking at? (how much weight reduction will i have to do...) are the any modifications i will have to make to the structure of the car to accomodate the motor? and finally, about how much will it cost????
any info would be great help, thanks!

Re: VR6 motor swap

I can't comment on this topic with very much expertise, but I can tell you right off the bat that It will cost you alot of money. We're talking that unless you have a full machine shop at your house, the price difference will probably be 10X what the n/a to 951 difference is. If the project really interests you and you have alot of time and money, well, more power to you man, people will definately flock like seagulls to french fries to see your project. Also, keep in mind that the VR6 engine isn't even that powerful stock, so you will have to budget for all the modifications, not to mention trying to find space for them. Trust me, if I were you, I'd just buy a product that came fast from Zuffenhausen.

The best option to date is for the small block chevy V-8, since there is a kit for it. There is still alot of work involved, and it is really only for the person who is looking for something really unique. I personally prefer the 951, as it comes with the better body, suspension, brakes, aerodynamics, and power--from the factory. And it doesn't even cost a huge amount more.

If you want a good idea, by the way, of the cost of a project like this, I know where and how to look. First, go to www.ebay.com. Second, go to ebaymotors and then to Porsche. Click on the "930" button in the middle left frame. Look at the buy it now prices for late model 3.3L 930's (mid-late 80's) with low milage. Now you know about what it will cost you to do your project right, and what you could spend your money on instead.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, it's just that it's good to have the sense beat into you early so that you don't become deluded.
