92 Merc is coughing/choking, especially when idling?
About a year ago I had the O2 sensors replaced and it seemed to combat the problem for a while, however after driving cross country I'm back to where I was. It hasn't reached the cut-out state where it actually dies but it is giving every indication that it is right around the corner. Is this related to what I recently read about dealing with the engine light, which incidently has been going on since I bought the car three years ago. Or is there a bigger issue at the end of the maroon velveted tunnel?
Specifically speaking this general occurs at stop lights or very very low speeds. It essentially feels as if all the power disappears when it starts to shift into an idle state and this leads to the engine sputtering, kind of like someone taking in air while crying. Re: 92 Merc is coughing/choking, especially when idling?
I just bought a 1992 Gran Marquis from my grandparents, it was misfiring badly when we got it.
It turns out that it has a coolant leak somewhere near the spark plugs, and when they filled up with coolant, they misfired. I put in a bottle of stop leak, and changed the wires and plugs, and she runs fine now. I see an intake manifold, or head gasket job coming on soon though. |

That sounds exactly like what mine was doing a while back. It would idle very rough and nearly stall out (never did though). It also ran very bad under acceleration and never had full power. After screwing around with many, many things (a lot of things) it turned out to be a dirty MAF sensor. The car ran perfectly after that.

Re: 92 Merc is coughing/choking, especially when idling?
It surely is like a fraternity. If the problem continues after replacing the MAF, try the Idle Air Valve/motor.
