99 grand caravan 3.8 trans problem

hi i have a 1999 grand caravan sport 3.8l.
this week when i strated my van and decided to shift into drive it kicked violently and aswell in reverse. also the PRDNL icons are going crazy
they dont register somtimes and somtimes all the icons are circled(like im in all gears at once) im aware of limp mode because it has happened to me before but this problem is different the van runs fine when moving without any trans related problems but just the violent shifting from d to r and the display of the geras is all messed up

i changed the fluid and the problem is still there

There's a little switch on the transmission called the PRNDL switch, which tells the computer what gear it is in. That usually acts up; it's weird that the tranny's not in limp mode, but if you want to find out for sure, you can go to either a Chrysler dealer of to any service shop that has a scanner and see if they can test the PRNDL (pronouced prindle) switch.

Ya i went to have it cheaked at a transmission place and they plugged it in the computer and found nothing.
the funny thing about this problem is that one day if would be all messed up and the next day everything is fine

in checking this problem the guy found that the black box under the trany is leaking but he said this would not creat the problem i was experiencing

is it true that they cant fix the leak but only replace the black box?

the black box you are refering to, that wouldn't happen to be the oil pan would it? That's the only "black box" on the transmission that I can think of. If that's it, they can easily fix that by putting a new gasket on their. He's right that the leak wouldn't create the problem you're having. Now this sounds like a wiring problem.

What he might be talking about the black box, is the shift solinoid on the front of the trans. You can but the gaskets from the dealer and replace them yourself. About an hour to do or less.
