trac off button

ok, so I'm new at this...please be patient I have a 2001 alero. I got it last february (my mustang got hit!!eek!) I've had so many problems with it. This morning I started it and the service engine soon light came on along with teh trac off light. I tried to turn trac on but that didnt work. then i came home, shut the car off and tried to start it again and it went off...any ideas whats wrong? or if its serious?? thanks!
