98 regal gs

I have a 98 gs and I start the car and the engine dies. I can't hold a idle. Does anyone have any ideas or can tell me how to check the trouble codes.

You'll need to have it scanned with an OBD-II diagnostic scanner. These scanners start out at around $80. If you have an AutoZone nearby they will scan your car for free.

if it starts and dies after 5 seconds and you can restart it. it is probably the resistor. just went thru this problem .it is located on the passenger side framerail next to windshield washer tank in front of front tire. the plug to this is behind the passenger side headlamp and it can be jumped with a wire to see if that is the problem.the connector on mine was white with 2 wires easy to find and takes 5 minutes to jump with a piece of wire. pull your headlamp to test it (easier this way). resistor is a ceramic piece that costs around 55 bucks. the car gets full power to the fuel pump from relay for a few seconds then switches to a spped control relay which is attached to this resistor. so when the resistor goes no power goes to fuel pump after the car starts.

Save your money on the fuel pump resistor, alot of people in ClubGP have been bypassing it and mine has been that way for well over a year.GM stoped using the resistor in 2000.
