5Spd Conversion?

Hey guys, i found a sweet deal on an 85 300zx Turbo, but its automatic.
So, if i could get my hands on a 5spd could it be swapped it? has anyone ever done this? i figure if i did, it would be a good chance to rebuild the transmission and install a new clutch and flywheel.
Thanks.
Also, is this a 2+2? http://www.buysell.com/showad.asp?id=35502041

Ok, swapping transmissions is quite simple, but there are quite a few things you will need other than the transmission itself.
Just off the top of my head, you will need:
Clutch pedal assembly, manual brake pedal (its smaller), clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, clutch piping, transmission (obviously), transmission crossmember, manual driveshaft, shifter-boot and plate.

That should be about all you need, but it is a rather big job. Take your time because you don't want to screw up anything, especially mucking about with the pedals.

It looks to me like a 2 seater. An easy way to tell the difference is that the 2 seaters have triangular rear windows, whereas 2+2s have 4 sided rear windows.

yeah, like mikeman said, it is definitely doable and not that hard to do, especially if the motor is out but you will find it very time consuming. if you look on ebay, almost everytime i get on, there is soemone selling a 5-speed converison kit, that they have pieced together with spare parts. also, may want to check out z31.com for alot more details. good luck!!!

where are you??? the 2+2 was only offered in N/A in the states so i think that a turbo most be a 2 seater....

Eh i see so many 2+2 turbos down here, all engine-swapped it would seem. It seems to be a very popular swap.

Eh. Kinda rareish. I might see 1 or 2 a fortnight. Most people don't seem to know what they are (but have heard of them).

Ummmmm what about the ECU, starter. flywheel, clutch. Also check to see if the pilot bearing or bushing is the same......My bet is that its not. Often an overlooked part doing these swaps on most cars.

ECU? As far as I knew the auto and manual ECUs were the same. The auto just had a small transmission controller in the boot though.
I'm also assuming that the clutch is going to come with the transmission seeing as mine did when I swapped it in.

Well according to my research they are not the same. There is a different part number for the manual and automatic. manual tranny
auto tranny

the automatic ECU will work for the manual tranny but the manual ECU will not work with an auto tranny. the auto tranny just has a couple extra wires, which if was switched to a manual tranny would be extra useless wires.

Re: 5Spd Conversion?

I don't why everyone is so damn picky about having a damn MT! If it's AT keep it that way! make it a drag-car!

Shit... it wasn't until F&F showed up and now everyone wants a stick!
