Liftgate won't stay up
The liftgate on my 97 GC won't stay up in cold weather. I have guessed that the supports have worn out and don't have enough pressure to hold it up when the temperature drops. I know of several places where I can get replacement supports but it is not at all obvious how I get the old ones off and the new ones on. If anyone could point me to the directions on how to do this I would appreciate it.
Thanks |

Re: Liftgate won't stay up
the lower connections simply pop off and the uppers use a hex key. not hard to do, but be careful not to have the liftgate fall on you.

Mark,
It has been about a year and a half since I changed ours so can't remember the difference between the replacement ones and the factory ones. It seems to me that the original had a little cover (like a half inch)that needs to be popped off or slid off while the replacements did not have a cover. Heck, I don't remember, but I know it is easy with common tools if a person has any mechanical ability. I bought our replacements at a NAPA store. Just call your local auto parts store and I bet they will know exactly what you need. I agree with Mx, definitely use something that will hold the weight up while working on it as that door is too heavy to have someone just hold it up for you. I used a 2x4 cut to length. Mike |
