94 Explorer Loud Vibrations
Hey guys,
My 94 ford explorer has been making a very loud noise and has alot of vibrations now with a tinging noise like a tin can being kicked around (sound seems louder outside the passenger side. It is the winter, could this be part of the problem? Even when the engine is warm the vibrations are still appearant. If anybody has any ideas of what it could be please let me know. Thanks Timmy

May be the flexplate / flywheel on the torque convertor. If so it requires R&R of trans to get to it. Does this noise start the moment you start the engine? Does the starter gear make a grinding sound when starting at times? If yes to both, I'm afraid that my guess is the flexplate.

Keep in mind i do not know very much about engines, but it sounds alomost like the engine is loose, like a engine mount or something. When stopped the noise is obvious even when standing outside of the explorer, and yes the moment the engine is started you can hear the noise, but it seems to become louder when given more throttle.

Use a long hose as a sethoscope to listen for the noise. Listen in and around the bellhousing area. It can only be moving parts, not suspension, brakes, u-joints, front or rear axle if you get noise with motor running and car is not moving. I say flexplate because; motor running and flexplate is mounted to crankshaft and car is in park gear. I bet that it you shift gear to reverse or drive you get loud clunk and that tin noise changes. Let us know what you find and how you fix the prob.

I wouldn't doubt it if it is my transmission, whenever my friends are riding with me i slam on the accelerator on and off like tapping morse code to make the ride fun, and constanly drive with it floored. Is that not good for it?
