No AWD in Reverse??

Hi,
I have a 1992 Plymouth AWD Grand Voyager that I purchased months ago. I finally got a chance to put it to the test with the snow we got this in Pittsburgh and found that the AWD works great going forward, but it doesn't work going in reverse. Does anyone have any suggestions to resolve this? Thanks in advance!

hmm I have a 1993 town and country AWD I believe they are the same AWD parts and it would have to be the rear diff. or transfer case problem if there is no AWD in reverse.. the rear basically has two axle shafts that bolt to the differential.. there is a long 2 piece driveshaft that goes to the front and bolts to the transfer case..possibly you have a problem in on of these items and my first guess would be the rear differential..but withoput an investigation I really have no clue ...good luck these AWD are very spendy and I just got done replacing the trans...transfer case(housing cracked) and rear differential(housing cracked)...to the tune of 2500.00 all used parts ..so baby it and make it last ..and be darn sure to get any vibrations immediatly corrected..good luck

I was afraid of that, thanks. It has no problem going up snowy hills in forward, but once I tried to back up one and the front wheel kept spinning. I'll have to look into it. Thanks again!

I have a 97 AWD and I had a bearing go out in the support bracket just behind what is called a vicous coupler. I learned a lot about this AWD system. there is a lot of monkey motion to it. When you put the van in reverse right past this vicious coupler there is a vaccum operated fork that gets it signal from the reverse lights. It shifts a gear inside it so when the drive shaft spins backwards it will sill engage the rear wheels when the front wheels break loose. The vicous coupler is like a clutch it only drives the rear wheels when the front wheels spin. If you have aacces to a service manual it gives a good detail on how the system works. You might have lost vaccum to that shift fork. I dont have my service manual at the moment but let me know if you find out what is broke. I hope this helps.... Amin

You are my Hero You have solved two problems for me First a I also found out I had no AWD in reverse and guess what my back up lights didnt work well I tore into it and found that whoever put in a pigtail for the trailer they were pulling had cut these wires along the frame and they were not completing the power to everything I fixed these lines and at that time I also noticed that the rubber was falling out around where the hanger bearing is placed and that is obviously my vibrationj....I appreciate your response ..solved alot f headaches I was having again thankx...

Great info, thanks a lot!! When I get some time I'll investigate it and post my results.
