Unhappy 89 Caravan Lugging.

I've got a 89 Caravan (automatic) with a 2.5L engine, non fuel injected. Whenever I start the thing I have to give it a lot of gas or it just chugs for a little bit then dies. Sometimes when I release the clutch to start off, even if I'm hitting the gas pretty hard, my take off seems to be really jumpy like it's not getting enough fuel, or the fuel is dirty. I tried replacing my fuel filter, but it didn't seem to help. My next idea is to maybe replace the fuel pump. Am I throwing my $$ in the wrong place? Any ideas? Thanks.

Perhaps you would like to be alittlebit more [email protected] fuel injected or carburettor? if it is carb then does this happen when cold or at any time.

To be honest it's actually my brother's car. He could only describe the symptoms so much over the phone, or else I'd be able to explain more. It's not fuel injected. The temperature doesn't seem to affect it. TY for responding.

Re: 89 Caravan Lugging.

If it has a carburettor then first adjust the choke. when cold one kick on the accelerator and the choke should engage(Close) when you crank the motor vacuum should open it alittle(Unloader) Once it starts the rpm should be high about1500 rpm.As it warms one quick kick on the acc;erator pedal and rpm should drop to about 750to 800 rpm.If this happens and you take off and if it hesitates then your accelerator pump is not functioning properly or your spark plug gap is too much. If it does not hesitat and wants to turn off then your antidieseling unit may not be fully functional(if it does have one)I can't thinkf of anything else

Re: 89 Caravan Lugging.

The carbs on these seem to need pretty regular rebuilds, and rebuilding it is a cheap fix. For less than $50, you should be able to rebuild the carb and replace the choke, ensuring that those aren't the source of any problems.

Wink

Sounds likely the accelerator pump... a carb rebuild is cheap and easy enough as well.
