Question Transfer case lube

What's the best lube for my transfer case and how easy of a job is it to replace? I thinnk I have the original oil in there. I have 63,000 miles and whenever I put it in auto4wd it seems to be grinding a little. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. PS It's a 99 SLT.

The owners manual calls for ATF Dextron II. Just drain the t case from the lower plug and then fill it from the upper one. Fill it just to the bottom of the threads on the upper fill plug. And then reistall the plug and you're done.

Yip, transmission fluid is all you need.

There are two plugs, a lower and an upper.

Remove the top one, then remove the bottom one and drain the fluid.

Then pour some in the top an allow it to drain out the lower hole to get rid of all the excess old fluid.

Reinstall the lower plug.

fill the case until it starts to dribble out the top.

Be patient, it might take some time for the fluid to get down into the whole thing to fill up.

Fill it slowly until it dribbles out the top and let it sit for a couple minutes and note if the level drops again.

If not, replace the top plug and consider the job done.

Also, you might want to do the front and rear differentials too.

I would have the local Jiffy Lube do it seeing they wil have the pump to pump out the old fluid seeing the diffs don't have a lower drain plug, only a top fill.

Use synthetics for everything.

I think I have a leak around one of the plugs. Are they the same plug bolt used for the oil pan? I see they have a rubber gasket. Thanks in advance...
