1992 Ga Probs

I got a 1992 Grand AM SE that I am havin too many probs with.

First of all, sometimes the ABS light is on and sometimes not. If it is not on when i get within 10MPH of stoppin it starts to sound like it is grinding or trying to actuate the ABS but this is on dry pavement. Is there any way to check the ABS fault codes without a scan tool? If there is, is there anywhere that I could find the meaning of the codes??

Second of all, my speedometer is off. I found that out today when I was driving next to my friend on the highway in his 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. At about 70MPH on my speedo I am going 72MPH and at 75MPH on my speedo I am actually going 82MPH!!! OMG! I am guessing that a dealership would have to go about recalibarting this.

Third, When I am driving down the highway, the check oil and service engine soon lights will come on for about 3-5 seconds and then go off. In about an hour ride they might come on about 3-5 times. Yes the oil level is fine and when I look at the oil pressure gauge it reads just fine also.

Fourth, when I leave my car to sit in the driveway to warm up on a cold morning the service engine soon light will be on when I get back in. As soo as I start driving it will go out and not come back on. I have checked this one manually by jumpering the ALDL and it came up with a "QUAD Driver" code. Anyone know what that means and how I would go about fixing it??? Or is that another dealership thing??

Any and all help is greatly appreciated as I would like to get this fixed

Re: 1992 Ga Probs

Just so you know your VSS sensor can cause the first 2 problems your having. If your Vehicle speed sensor was telling your ECM that you were traveling faster than your ABs sensor register at the wheels it will think your slipping and trigger your ABS light and it will also as you know throw off your speed. Also here is a site that will help you check what codes you have if your check engine light is coming on and will tell you what they mean www.troublecodes.net . Good Luck

Re: 1992 Ga Probs

is there anyone else that has some possible input on this?? I looked on the troublecodes.net website that I was linked to but I did not find the code that my car displayed. I think it is a code 26 but i checked it a long time ago so I would prolly have to check it again. Thanks for the help

Re: 1992 Ga Probs

Code 26 is Quad-Driver circuit [QDM], but honestly, I have nfc what that refers to.

Did you change tire size drastically just before you began niticing the speedo error? And are U sure it your speedo and not your buddy's?

Re the brake-grind thing, sometimes GM ABS "growls" even if it doesn't engage, sort of like it loads up to pulsate if the pedal gets pushed to the limit that triggers the ABS system. [Its' like the ABS is sensing braking, and is being ready in case you go into a hard-stop].

Check your front pads and rotors, all ya have to do is pull the wheel, you can easily check rotor for damage or scoring, and you can view your pads through the top of the caliper. I would go and pull the caliper anyways, uses a hex-bit for the bolts, and examine the pads just for peace of mind.

The rest of the warning light stuff may just be linked to the QDM problem, but that I clueless on.

If it runs well, good power, performance, braking, I wouldn't get heartburn over the problems yet. But you are right to be alert to "this isn't right" observation.

Re: 1992 Ga Probs

I am in need to ressurect this thread due to the "problems still exist" theme, lol. Now the ABS light is on constantly. I am not sure about the speedometer anymore. My g/f states that sometimes the speedometer will not come off of 0 and sometimes it will just go right up to 60-70MPH and teeter between them and 0. I dunno for myself on that one but she claims she saw it. The SES light still comes on at times but them goes away when I start driving. I am pretty sure that is the same code 26 as before. I will check and post back.

Edit: I went and checked the codes....... now it gives me 26 & 27. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR..............wtf is up with this demon. I have been searchin the net for a bit on the probs and it is all too confusing. I am hoping that there is a dealer mechanic that might catch this message and be able to find out some info for me.

TIA for any and all help!

Jeremy
