ticking is driving me nuts

i have a 92 chevy with 4.3 i have this very strange constant ticking sound you hear and it sounds like it is coming from behind the dash. it gets worse if i step on the gas.everything seems to work just fine. the tick seems like it is louder when it is just idleing. i have heard of this before from freinds but nobody seems to know what it is. its not the heater,its not coming from engine,its not coming out of the speakers. ive checked everything.i have looked for this noise seems like forever the truck has a new 4.3 engine runs great new tranny 4L60E works great. anyone know what it could be or know how to fix it????? thank you for any help or ideas !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it could be an electrical thing or mabey your ecm.

I encountered a similar problem when I replaced the 350 in my 90 C/K. Turned out the fuel lines had slipped out of their clip and were hitting the back of the block. When you accelerate and the fuel pump is pushing more, it increases. Suggest you check the lines.

Hmm, I never even thought of that. I'll check it tom. morning before I leave. I'll get back and see if that was it. It doesn't affect performance but it's really annoying.

If you think it's behind dash, then I might suspect the heater fan. Perhaps a pice of crud got stuck in the fan blade rotor and as it turns it makes a ticking sound. This happened to me on a couple of different vehicles.

It sounds like you have ruled out a lifter noise, but sometimes they can sound like they are behind the dash also.

Also, could be something flywheel related. Perhaps inspection cover is loose or maybe even a loose flywheel.

i have had the fan out recently because i had a leave get in there. i have already removed the flywheel cover. i have checked the flywheel. it isnt the fuel lines rattling. just sounds like it is around the steering column. the noise is simular to radio noise but i know it isnt coming from radio because i tryed unpluging the radio and speakers and still heard it so i give up. thanks for your replys

Since this noise is engine-speed related, I would focus on engine components. Here's another easy (maybe) test. Take off the fan belt(s) and then run the engine briefly. That will tell you if it's any of the belt-driven accessories. I used this test to locate bad alternator bearings, which I was convinced was a bad power steering pump. Metal is a great conductor of noise, so it's easy to think the noise is coming from one place when it's really coming from somewhere else.

I had a switch go bad that was used in changing the fresh/recyled air vent, it made a constant clicking/ticking sound when it went bad, So I unplugged it and now it stays in recycle mode.(No worries and no noise) Truoble is locating it since they are hidden under the dash.

Check for a small exhaust leak. I have that ticking on my truck. I had the AIR system on mine when I bought it... pumps were seized up so I took the system off and welded the air pipes shut. They've rusted pinholes in them, and you can sure hear it, but the hole is so small I can't hardly feel the escaping exhaust.

Like GMCMudBogger said, check the recirculation air door. Also check the blend door.
