94 SL2 DOHC Engine interchange ?

I'm looking at a 1994 Saturn SL2 lloaded with an automatic trans and a hole in the side of the block !! The guy never bothered with his oil light

In short what years can I swap in since it seems like now there are a lot of newer ones (low Milage engines) at a good price compaired to the older ones.

Is it just a case of useing the old 94 exhaust manifold (maybe) and swaping over a few other parts- or were major changes done in 99 or 2000 ?

The engine swap is no biggie- I just want to know what can work and whats involved the first time.

ANY info helps, Thanks

Re: 94 SL2 DOHC Engine interchange ?

frist, nice sig.

any 91-midyear99 DOHC Engine will work, late 99- 02 only the lower end will work. the intake manifold was redesigned as part of several changes in 99(made of plastic and top mounted throttle body) and will not clear earlier firewalls/bulkheads. your 94 exhaust manifold will bolt-up to any 91-mid99 head (and i am 99% sure intake manifold will to, but throttle body may not). 91/92 engines will not work with your PCM/wiring harness, weather or not 95+ will depends if you have california emissions or not. the emission sticker should say if you do. the federal emissions 94(and all 91-93) have a vacuum EGR, california emission 94s(and all 95+) have an electric EGR. if the 94 does have california emissions then 93-mid99 will work with your PCM, but if you have federal emissions then only 93/94 will work with your PCM. in short, a vacuum EGR cylinder head can be modifyed to work with a electric EGR, but not vise versa. :P and if you swap the PCM/wiring harness, chances are you may need to swap the trans.

i know lots of info, ever year has little things that need work too, pick a year and i'll tell you more.

Thanks !
WOW ! Thay was more information than I hoped I was going to need !!

I have to look at the car again because. The guy said it was a 94 but the emission sticker said EPA conforms to 1995- And it does have a vacuum EGR-

As far as the replacement engine goes- The newer the better, I guess.
Kind of -wait and see- See when/if one is availible localy for a fair price- Why do you have one you want to get rid of ? (Milwaukee WI) area.... or anyone ?

that doesn't sound right to me... ask for the VIN, 10th digit- R=1994, S=1995.

and in reply to your PM - that engine's cylinder head will not bolt up to your intake. its the style engine that only the lower end would work(block, crank, pistons), you would need to swap the old cylinder head onto the block. but i doubt the 94 head is much better then the block.

Yes it's a 94 - Vin 'R' not 'T'. But the Emission EPA sticker says 1995.

Gee I wonder why, some replacement parts ? - Carfax Time ?? Anybody want to run the VIN ?

Re: 94 SL2 DOHC Engine interchange ?

I have a 93 twin cam I am going to part out. Odometer says 135000, I picked up the car last fall because it needed a clutch, but I decided to part it out. I am in central WI.
