1992 Single Turbocharged Intercooled 302 5.0 Liter Mercury Cougar

I'm bored. REAL bored, so I decided to tear into my mundane cougar. When I built it, I built it stock, with the exception of 99 Cobra wheels, and a conical filter. Now, the rear end fell apart, and its a PITA to take it apart, so I figured I might as well make it worthwhile while its apart. I got 2 engine choices. The complete, stock 302, or the 5.8 351 from a truck. The 5.8 is missing a few parts, and I dont know if i will be able to find them. My next decision is weather or not to go with a twin turbo set up. Im going to start brain storming and gather pieces. I need some refernce pictures though..

Re: WIP: 1992 Twin Turbo or Single Turbo 5.0 302 or 5.8 351 Mercury Cougar

update: I couldnt find the parts i needed for my 5.8, and all I could find were good ref. pictures of single turbo setups, so 5.0L Single turbo set up is a go...

I started already. I modified the stock 302 header, added a turbine, and replaced the crappy stock "5.0 H.O." Upper Intake manifold with a "SALEEN S-351" one.

Finished exhaust system, and added intake. The intercooler pipes are going to be difficult. I might have to sacrafice realism for this. With the saleen intake, it will need a cowl induction hood..

Nice work!! Would you be able to sit the engine a bit lower in the chassis to get better hood clearance? I almost had to on my still-unfinished Cougar.

Looks great project. Are you going to keep every part as silver? I try to paint my engines with different shades of grey and silver.

Okay, I loaded the pics up from my laptop, saved them to a disc, and put them on my PC..

Painted intake pipe and intercooler pipes red, with a chrome BOV and some weathering..

3" exhaust pipes into Y-Pipe into resonator (eliminating cross over pipe)

I think I might repaint the car primer grey.. with stock wheels..for the ultimate sleeper look

WTF was that first turbo V8, if that is real, some one needs to tell them that you can tuck stuff together
