ON average what does a good paintjob go for?

I'm debating on painting my camaro (either white, green or grey) from black. i'm wondering this.

1) How many coats of paint
2) How many coats of clear
3) How much would it cost to get that done.

Any estimates and/or places would be great. Greater new York area.

2000 Camaro.

For a color change done right you are looking at $5k minimum

Re: ON average what does a good paintjob go for?

the guy at the bodyshop said that the paintjob on my Z28 would have costed in between $6 and $7,000.. (factory GM bright red w/blue pearl and silver 25th racing stripes and shaved handles)

To do a color change properly (my car was red to begin with) would have costed a lot more to do it properly.. You haveto paint the doorjambs and sills, underhood and fenders, all around the hatch area..
When you bring your car in to get an estimate, to save yourself some money, tell them you will dis-assemble and re-assemble everything yourself..
a large % of the cost of a new paintjob is labor for R&Ring everything..

This past March I had my 92 RS Refinished.
I had the body shop completely dismantle the car and paint each part individually.
The car was then reassembled , color sanded , polished and then all of the rubber gaskets, emblems, badges and decals were replaced with new.
Also replaced the front turn signal lenses to give a fresh crisp look.

I did not want ANY tape marks anywhere on the car.
I had a paragraph written in the contract of exactly what i was expecting and what would be rejected if expectations were not met, such as runs blemishes and sand scratches showing thru. & warranty terms
I made frequent visits to the Body Shop unannounced to inspect the progress and to satisfy my mind that no shortcuts were taken.
I was not disappionted. It was a perfect job the first time.

The project took 5 weeks to complete.

The final cost of everything was $5950.00

I Have had nothing but compliments on the car - it stands out in the crowd.

Next I will be totally renewing the interior with a leather package for the seats and door panels from Classic Soft Trim, New carpet, floor mats, headliner, & sail panels from Year One
I have an appointment in mid February with the Upholstery Shop to get started on the final phase of the project.

Re: ON average what does a good paintjob go for?

i was also considering doing it myself. to save money. i know someone who could help get the technique down. but i was going to have each piece taken off too. my dads 86 ta was painted by macco. they painted half of the strut towers all of the wires and nobs for the headlights. got overspray on the tail lights, just overall it was carelessness. but u get what u pay for as he said. hey rs92, u have any pics?

Z-28 just done for $3500- that's down to bare metal too- and I don't know how many coats with rubout and wet sand in between. McMillen Custom Paint 562-920- 0719 if you ar in So.Cal. area. Talk to Dickie. They do nothing but custom cars- mostly older and classics.

It doesn't take thousands of dollars necessarily to get a nice paint job that stands out......If you have a Maaco Auto Painting shop down there they have some great deals and stand by their work, just check out my 91 Camaro at Cardomain.com/id/bag91, I get compliments all the time even though I spent only around $800. Had the paint for almost two years, and it still looks new.
It will last a while if you take care of it, and wax and wash it regularly...

yep. I completely agree with bag91.

I prepped, and primed my car myself, then took it over to Maaco, and had the Ambassador Paint job done. (The cheapest one)

You can save alot when you prep everything yourself. It isnt as hard as it seems. Click my Thunderbird link for pics of my prep job and Maaco paint.

Wow, you prepped yourself, how much was the paintjob then?
How long have you had the paintjob, does it still look nice?
I just want to compare how yours is doing to mine....since we pretty much got the same paintjob.
That is one of the saddest sportsbike fall I have ever seen in my life...
