Question 99 Grand AM problems/w ABS, Trac Off, lights coming on?

I purchased this car in 1999 Brand New to drive to work and it now has 140,000 miles on it (has been taken well care of) . I have just started having problems (other than the brakes) with a couple of lights coming on in my Dash. The ABS, Trac. Off lights used to come on when I would drive the car and now there coming on when I start the car and staying on? I have a friend who has a 2000 Grand AM and he said his car done this with 42,000 miles on it. He said he had an Wheel Bearing going bad, and when he had it fixed he said his instrument panel lights went off. What puzzles me is there is hardly any noise coming from the front or rear end. When something like the wheel bearings going out, wouldn't it make a pretty loud noise or just breakdown? Can somebody explain this to me and tell me what they think is wrong with it? Any feedback is much Appreciated!! Thanks!

Yeah, the cause of the problem isn't the wheel bearing. Its the ABS reluctor ring that attached to the bearing. I believ on your cars you have to replace them as a whole. What is happen is that one of your wheels ABS sensor's it is using to measure how fast it is spinning is giving a incorrect reading telling your computer your registering slippage. Which is why the light is coming on. If I were you I would check the sensor's at the wheels first for any stripped or damaged wires or possibly even a loose harness. Good luck. Also welcome to the forum

Hello, And Thank You for the reply John! I will get that checked out first thing Monday Morning. My friend did not mention anything about a Sensor. But if you have to replace them as a Whole then I guess that should take care of the problem. Also John, is the Wheel Bearings on the front or Back of the car, and if you Replace (1) wheel bearing on one side would you do the other side as well? Thanks for the Welcome and for replying to my post. You answered my Questions!

No problem, I am glad to help. Also if the bearing itself was the problem I would recommend changing them in pairs but since the light is the only problem you have I think that the wheel that is the problem would be the only one requiring change. Also here is a ebay auction for your wheel bearing that also shows the harness and sensor I was telling you about. This should give you a idea of what your looking for- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33728 . So basically just jack up each wheel. remove the tire and look for damage harness or wire. And if there is not signs or loose or damage wire or harness, You may have to do some diagnostic work to pinpoint the wheel with the problem. Good Luck.
