Obvious

The answer is obvious. Either the pontiac or camaro is the way to go.

Just dump whatever motor is in there, put in a vortec headed 383 stroker and a th-350 trans w/higher stall converter. It should put out around 450 hp and if you have some decent forged pistons you could put a 150 hp nitrous kit on as well. That is guaranteed 11's.

Cheap, fast, and cool. The eclipse would no doubt run faster on the installed engine but if it is truly a project car you might as well do the swap. The eclipse would definitely get better gas mileage though, although not having that evil, lopey idle of a V8.

There are always trade-offs.

Re: choices, choices, choices

All 3 would make great project cars...I can't make a decision myself...do you have any specific goals? It might be easier to decide if you pinpoint what you want to get out of this project.

Re: choices, choices, choices

Go with the 79 TA. Atleast if it's in good condition. My dad used to own one in his younger days, and he said that they have some sort of "Fireball Cam". He loved it because when you are on a roll, that thing will just give you so much more pull . He took on an 80's TA and smoked it, he practically ran circles around it. They aren't great from a stop, but when they get going they are damn quick.

Otherwise, considering the condition of the TA, go with the Eclipse GSX. AWD drive is great, plus as Turbo2nr said "it's the best bang for your buck". Late...

For drag racing purposes, RWD.

I'd go with either of the GM twins. There is almost endless possibilities with a SBC.

79 TA 6.6 isn't that the TA in Smokey and the Bandit?

Re: choices, choices, choices

Honestly...i'd pick american muscle over an import.

Don't get me wrong, imports are kick ass...but theres nothing like the sound and body shake...of an american V8.. You know when you get in a big block (or even small) and you rev it...and the whole body shakes.

Gives me an erection :-)

Re: choices, choices, choices

if all you want is pure speed go for one of those domestics. A gsx with around a grand in mods is no joke though.

To some there is no sound better than the roar of a built v8 engine and to others there is nothing better than the sound of a spooling turbo and loud blow off valve. I personally get off on both.
