93 stalling out while driving

i have a 93 lumina and the other day when i was going home from work, my car suddenly died on me when i was going about 45mph. the speedometer dropped to 0 and the check engine light would flash on, then it started going again for me and i continued on my way. the next 10 miles were absolute hell. I would get the speed up to about 45 and it would stall out competely and i'd have to start it up again (with no problem), other times i could get it going faster than 45 and other times less than 35 before it would stall and die. it even stalled out and died when i had it sitting in park.

I had a problem a few years ago with the car stalling out and dying when i'd come to a stop and a local mechanic pulled some plug and told me that i'd lose some gas mileage but that would be about it.

my question is what is causing this? is the transmission gone on the car now? is it something as simple as changing the transmission fluid, or something else? any information is greatly appreciated because my job requires me to drive around all day. thanks for any help.

The plug your mechanic pulled was to the TCC solenoid, which will cause your car to stall when stopping only. It won't cause this nor will your transmission. Could be many things, but you need a code check to see what codes were stored when engine light came on. Advance and others will check this for free if it is drivable. Otherwise there is a procedure where you can short out two of your computer plug in pins and count the number of flashes. Should be listed somewhere in this forum. Or, you can buy a $20-30 plug in tester for this with instructions if you wish. That would be a starting point. Sounds like it could be crank sensor, EGR valve, ignition module, or even a weak fuel pump. Just to many things to guess at. getting a code would be helpful. If it is a crank sensor, they are pretty cheap, EGR and igntion module not. Even your ECM could be failing, but that is a longshot. All of these things are going to give out on these cars somewhere down the line. usually the crank sensor first. Was going to ask when your TCC was unhooked, as unhooking a 4 speed I hear is not good, but I see it has been a long time.

You stated that you lost your RPM signal. This could happen if a Crank Position Sensor is shorting out at a high temp, or by being bumped around alot. Also, like the previous poster sid, you should have it hooked to a scanner at your local auto-zone. They will do it for free.
